Putin can't afford to lose this war, nor could any other Russian leader in his position. It is very unlikely that Ukraine will push Russia out of it's country, and if it goes that way then Russia will almost surely use desperate measures.

Finland and Sweden will not benefit at all from joining NATO. Certainly, Russia is not a conventional threat to Finland in the short term. In the long run, joining NATO won't make them safer, because it weakens the chances of diplomacy. It is obvious that security isn't even a concern of NATO's stronger members, and that NATO members could not care less about each other.

In the long term joining NATO will make it harder to end this new cold war. They are opening themselves up to control from the US, which will have all sorts of long-term consequences. Increased defense spending from this will not be put to waste, it means more opportunities for aggression towards weaker nations.
