It's hard to see through lies, since we are drowned in them from birth. In wartime it's turned up to 11. The people who give a good perspective here are those who have a very good historical understanding. The perspective of people like Patrick Cockburn, (a journalist that has covered war in the middle east for a long time now), is night and day with the mainstream opinion and rhetoric in Europe right now.

There is a lot to learn from looking at how political leaders have behaved in past wars. There's also a probably a lot of historical examples of nations starting wars after being backed into a corner. Off the top of my head-that was the main motivation for Saddam's invasion of Kuwait, and Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Historically, statesmen (and especially dictators) do not like backing down. They are extremely insecure people that would often rather burn their country to ashes rather than appear weak, or to lose. It's easy to see recent examples of that (Assad in Syria).
