The labels for the black part are mostly wrong. Great recession was caused by not having enough public debt. 13 is wrong if its public debt, right if its private debt. Everyone means public debt tho when they mention it. Since so many civilizations have collapsed in part for environmental reasons in the past, it should generalize for this graph and have a label.

The doomsday beleifs are generally consistent with expert opinion, (doomsday clock is at 90 seconds, the lowest its ever been).

I think its extremely difficult to say because empires dont raise and fall as smoothly as in these charts, Rome had many setbacks and many rises, for example I bet it looked like the end of Rome when the republic fell, yet the empire grew twice as big and lasted another 500 years more.

Many of those 18 points are redundant or plain silly, wealth gap has never been an indicative of any period in an empire, particularly since most of history is monarchies and the world right now has many exmaples or raising and falling countries with vastly different gini coefs.


Overextension are all obvious in hindsight, but its almost impossible to tell at the moment, could Rome only hold the peninsula? or east europe, was west europe too much or north africa or Britannia?, I think the only way to tell about this overextension is by currency debasement, that for sure a sign of being past prime, the Roman's had to debase de dinarius many times to be able to keep paying salaries, (still had a few hundred years to cruise on though).

As an empire grows through productivity and/or conquest so does the state, eventually the economic growth slows down but the state's growth doesnt, it eats more and more of its productivity to the point it needs to debase currency to keep feeding upon its foundation and collapses.


not related to the description of the number but if I had to guess where the US is at I'd say its at about 12 or 13 and I hope that when and if China takes over i'll be long dead, If the US who was built by principled men did so many horrible things in power I shudder at the thought of what Chine would do to the world while at the helm.

Haha I thought that statement would throw u off. What I said is logically equivalent to saying the great recession was caused by too much private debt, since public surplus = private debt by the same amount, as it's a known accounting identity in macro econ. I just wanna frame it as public surplus being the problem to make the Austrians lose their shit tho. But again, it's logically equivalent, and it was caused by too much private debt.
