You used to have an Evo too that you rallied didn't you? It's weird how different our experiences are... The turning circle in my Evo and M3 was way way way worse than it was in my ST!
Tbh I find that the Top Gear reviews (And basically every other publication) should be taken with a pinch of salt. It seems virtually every car gets a positive review. My cynical brain tells me that it is that way because it's in the best interest of both the car manufacturers and the publication to highlight strengths of a new vehicle and ignore it's weaknesses. Group tests are also virtually always close since they don't really want to shit on any one of the cars. The worst reviewer is Rory Reid, who in his first ever review of a car on Top Gear UK reviewed the newest shape Focus RS and he basically called it the best car on sale. In his 2nd review he reviewed a Tesla Model X and guess what, best car on sale apparently. It feels so fake it was cringe. Don't get me wrong I'm sure both of those cars are good cars in their segment but it was so exaggerated how much praise he put on those cars.
Several years ago Chris Harris was banned from reviewing Ferraris because he outed them for supposedly using tuned versions of the cars customers got when lending them to people to review. If people are gonna trash cars in their reviews then the manufacturer won't give them the cars to review anymore and before long the automotive journalist is without a job.
In my experience, the Megane was a much more focused and better driving car than the ST, better peddle feel and position, lower seating position and more taut suspension, less torquesteer despite bigger turbo, probably actually marginally quicker than the ST when moving, had better traction despite being on the same compound (I always used the Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 2s back then - since then I'm more of a Michelin Pilot Super Sport/PS4 guy, but the Goodyears were solid tyres overall), but also it was a lot harder and much less comfortable - the reason I eventually sold it. It was more racecar than the ST which to me actually just feels like a normal Focus but with a more powerful engine in it. The ST225's engine was also much more special so it felt like going backwards to me. Though another gripe I had with that Megane250 was the engine sound, which is the worst sounding engine I've ever experienced. I mean the ST250 doesn't make a very inspiring sound either to me, especially with the sound symposer getting in the way, but that Megane engine basically sounds like a dull vacuum cleaner, only amplified if you get an aftermarket exhaust on it. |

Midian what do you think about the Civic Type R vs WRX STI (I think they are cooler than just the WRX), and the Golf Type R?
Even if you say you have to take car reviews with a grain of salt, Civic Type R seems universally praised driving wise. The looks are a bit much for me though. |

No, my rally car is a Clio RS MK2, rallying in an Evo is expensive, the Clio is getting very old now though and I'm planning on getting a turbo rally car since our races are usually at high altitudes so the performance difference is massive, but on the other hand, turbos on racing conditions are blowing up and causing issues very often.
I hate the price/performance ratio on those tires, the Michelin Pilot Sport are very good but you can find tires with alike performance for 1/3rd of the price, I usually dig the tire scores on TireRack when its time to change tires. |

I take it you mean the latest shape Civic Type R? The one I have is a 2005 and I've never driven any Subarus or the Golf R.
Obv main differences are that the Civic Type R is front wheel drive and the other two are four wheel drive. Though front wheel drive cars are a lot more competent these days with fancy diffs and trickery to reduce/eliminate torque steer and improve handling so that difference is probably not massively relevant.
Yeah reviews praise all of those cars in some way, but agreed the Civic does tend to get more praise lavished on it. Most comments seem to suggest that Golf R is a very grown up car, the Civic Type R is the opposite with it's child like design and more raw suspension set up. The WRX STI somewhere in the middle of those 2 cars in terms of how civilised it is. I believe the Civic is faster on track than either the WRX STI or the Golf R. I know someone who has a 500bhp Golf R, in fact it's the guy who bought my old Evo off of me and he says the Golf R is an extremely fast and competent car, but he finds it boring even at that power level. I think modern cars are just made that way tbh, they are built to eliminate NVH and be as comfortable as they can be and that takes away from some of the raw feel and excitement you get with older cars.
If you're in the market for any of those 3 cars you gotta spend some time test driving them all to figure out what you personally like about them and don't go purely by reviews. Not just because I think reviews are often way too kind on the cars but also because which cars you enjoy is a very subjective thing and you might hate the Civic's hard suspension, you might hate the Golf R's DSG gearbox or the WRX STI's exhaust note or any number of things.
If it was me personally looking in that market I would take the M235i over any of the above by a long way, or get something older and more fun that doesn't lose so much in depreciation |

In terms of fun of driving always take an AWD over an FWD... and then by transmission, always take a manual over a pseudo secuential, so STI > Golf .R > Civic Type R.
Yeah new cars are more boring than old cars even if they are faster, the perfect example being the GTR R35 it beats most cars in the track but is boring as fuck.
Midian if you enjoy cars so much you should try entering some kind of competition at amateur level, enter some shitty Miata cup, rallying or buy a shifter kart, you will love it and you will start to find your skill and bravery limits which is simply too reckless to do on open roads in street cars, after that you will feel that there isn't much point in spending 2k in a fucking exhaust for 0.5% power gain to be mostly in traffic and for that amount you can buy the shifter and you will be scared shitless how fast that thing is. |

Yeah the new one. People seem to rave about how they got rid of the torque steer on the CivicType R fwiw. I could see myself driving STI, Golf Type R, EvoX, or even these old r32 gtrs as my next car(did some revised financial calculations and shouldn't get a r35 until I am older). I just started getting interested in cars in the last couple of years though and with alot of those I feel a bit of pressure to know alot of stuff and "be a car guy" with the cars I mentioned as some of them are a bit hardcore. I'm probably not in the market for a car for at least a few years though, I just made this thread because the politics thread is ppl just shitting on each other haha. |

fwd is cheaper, lol.
Me personally I feel like there's more to enjoying driving than being a 1337 driver. GT-R -> Grand Touring - Racing.

I did look at getting into racing at one point but never went through with it. Money and time weren't on my side by the time I started to look into it, but I get what you're saying. Maybe one day |

changing your brake pads for the 1st time is always a bitch and if you did it pre-youtube era it was worse.
I'm looking to buy a Pick-up truck for work and I never knew they were that expensive and how much they retained value wtf... I'm probably going to get a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 or something like that |

I have a friend that is obsessed with pickups that would sell you all day that the Ford F-150 is a better pickup than anything in that class. If pushed he will admit that pretty much any pickup on the market these days will be pretty tough but Ford is the best in almost every pickup category. He isn't just a Ford fanboy either he knows the statistics of everything and can compare down to the last detail. |

Yea they are not cheap even used. Unless you can get away with a 4cyl truck with basic features. |

nah I'll carry heavy and big shit so I can't buy those pseudo-pickup cars, I can't even get a double cabin one which sucks because you can only fit 2 ppl. |

Well apparently in older models since I'm looking for a 2014ish one seems to be basically the Chevy Silverado vs Dodge Ram 1500 and the F-150.
The F-150 is the better looking of the three but its like 1k more than the others |

yea maybe your right about the gtr. idk tho I might actually like the boring dct transmission lol. It's like a solver-car haha. If I'm at at point where I can responsibly afford a GTR and decide it's too boring on the test drive would probably get something like a Lotus or some r1cer car.(not close to this right now tho haha) |
