You either are using units wrong, or you are betting irresponsibly.

1 unit is supposed to be 1% of your bankroll. I don't use the unit system anymore because it's too vague, and I am always changing my bet size.

oh I just use units as a set amount, for tonight it is $10.

In my mind I just think of it like stakes in Poker. I'm playing $10 units, can always move up and multiply it or move down. But I just use the term to give me some consistency in betting over an event or a certain amount of time.
