Bunch of my mates want to play friendly tournament style games every week. Where can we play online for free? |

I don't know what to say. Poker sites are surely going to charge rake no?
It depends how many people are playing but live tournaments are more fun albeit more time consuming. Just find some poor sap(s) to deal and pay them a % or whatever they will agree to or just have everyone deal on their dealer button. |

It seems to be not very profitable in the long run to play those kind of hands. - Gus Hansen | |

If you're looking for games that can be played in a tournament style, then online poker is the one to go for. It's the most prominent online poker site around, and you can play for real money or for play money. Tournaments are also a great way to practice your game, as you will be playing with people at all levels of expertise. So if you're just starting out, ????? is a great place to become familiar with the game and test out your skills. It's perfect if you're short on time and just want to get down to some serious gambling. |

This is true. Just play blackjack with a chart, craps on pass with max odds, baccarat... That's about it. You'll be making small -EV instead of blundering. I don't want to rationalize table games though. Unless you are betting small the -EV can still be quite large. One time I found this upstairs lair of sick Asian gamblers and I was playing Baccarat. It was like 4am and I was supposed to be at work. We were allowed to damage the cards so everyone was ridiculous peeling and tearing up cards they didn't like. I was literally the only white person in the room. There was magic in the air. I fucking LOVE getting dealt a face card and peeling a 4 across. |

I didn't mean to tell you how to gamble lostaccount. Just couldn't sleep either and felt like posting something. You can spend your money however you want to.
I was looking up variance in poker. Even a 10BB/100 winner can lose over a 50,000 hand sample. Although, very rarely. It can happen like 1% of the time. That would tilt me so much I think. I get tilted if I lose 2 buy-ins. It's scarier when you look up lower winrates. 5BB/100 we lose 13% of the time over 50,000 hands and a suggested bankroll of 2,996 BB for a 5% risk of ruin.
This also means you can luckbox at table games but not really if the EV is really awful. |

Do you guys play poker for fun these days, or are you playing poker with the hope of making a lot of money and/or being able to live off of poker for the rest of your life? |

I am playing for fun. There is some inkling of hope I can make like $30 / hr or more at 200 NL but I don't even think those games run on the site I play on. There weren't even any good games today at 10 NL. A lot of the regs are actually relatively solid especially compared to when I was coming up. Some of them are making sophisticated plays. The fish just get eaten alive. It's not a great situation. I am convinced some of these players are bots. I did some work on bankroll management today and realized I'm probably fine for now but may have to make even more buy-ins than I thought to avoid 5% risk of ruin and it will take 50,000 hands to move up if I run ok. That's also considering I consistently play well in good games. It's a long road and it never ends. Variance is constantly smacking me around. It is most definitely a grind.
I do think that NLHE is one of the best games in existence and it has been keeping me occupied. When I go back to work I won't have the time, energy, attention that I have now. It will be interesting to see what happens. I do think it has been good for me though. I don't think and obsess and ruminate on my problems as much as I used to. I do that with poker problems that are more easily solvable.
As far as able to live off of poker for the rest of my life: no, I don't think so. The goal at this point is just keep learning. The dream would be to play poker instead of all these shitty jobs that I've had but that is short-sighted in a way. I've only played 10k hands at 10 NL. My winrate is good but it is a LONG journey to cracking into 200 NL+ games. Although, if I play poker I'm more trapped in a way. What comes with playing poker for a living? Well, I may need 100 buy-ins to be safe and a year's worth of living expenses on top of that. I'm certainly not going to earn that at 10 NL. But, it's been a fun journey so far. |
