I don't think I'm really a post funny pictures kind of guy.
My new laptop came which I like a lot.
Unfortunately, these damn DAWs (Digital Audio Workstation) are like a whole other project. I can't do shit with them yet and will probably need hours of tutorials just to get started. FML.
I got a trial for Reaper and a trial for Ableton Live 11. UI I think I like Reaper better so I'll try and learn that. I used to have aspirations of being a live DJ but since I started playing the guitar that phase has seemingly past away. So, Ableton is like the standard for EDM and live concerts but Reaper seems like a dark horse for what I want to do which at the moment would be to make angsty NIN or Thom Yorke type music when I'm there and sit on a porch and finger pick an acoustic guitar when I'm there or maybe just make my own music that cannot be easily put in a box. Not that anyone cares and I don't know why I put words here but part of it is the 1% chance someone knows how to use Reaper although there are beginner tutorials all over YouTube so that's a bum reason. I think I have positive experiences from this blog and some lingering nostalgia that just keeps me coming back that I just can't quit. Also, the negatives don't seem that bad but kind of are. |

So, it took like 2 hours of tutorials but I just finished a rough draft of a song that was pretty fun to make. I decided to go with Ableton Live 11 for now.
I had a quote I was going to post from a book I'm reading but it's downstairs charging so maybe later.
It was something like
They love to see me live. They love to see me die.
They love to see me win. They love to see me cry...
whatever, I'll post the quote later maybe although in reality I don't think anyone gives a shit anymore. |

Here's a question that hiems might actually be well suited to answer.
My guitar is a cheap fender knock off and the damn neck is too thin
I need something like a Gibson Les Paul which obviously is not on the table as it would be thousands of dollars. Even a good knock off would be $800 and that is the price of a good desktop for me.
But, my teacher says he can sell me a $200 acoustic for $120. I figure he makes like $20 a guitar and it's easy for him to do and keeps people taking lessons. I am doing more acoustic work lately anyways and like the idea of having an acoustic with a wider neck. I played on one the other day and it felt pretty good. I guess this is a no brainer. Shell out the $120 for a beginner acoustic and continue my travels through Americana. |

My music setup on my ThinkPad is just about complete except I need to figure out how to input audio through my audio interface. I can hear through it. The power is definitely on but for some reason the mic + audio interface combo isn't working. I have a feeling it isn't set up right under options > preferences > audio but I've watched/read 4 tutorials and it still isn't working which is frustrating. I've made enough little snapshots of sounds and noises I am trying to move it forward. However, Ableton Live 11 takes a lot of time + effort to get really good at it. Plus, there are like endless plug-ins and add-ons it really is in depth. Sometimes I like making sounds on there and am driven to watch tutorials and read manuals but sometimes I want to just sit on my porch and finger pick an acoustic.
My life basically boils down to 3 things right now. There is work which I unfortunately spend the most time there. Then there is play which breaks down into connections and music. Connections also carries over into work. I mean no one there is my friend at this point but there are human connections with my fellow worker and to some degree and small connection with customers. I realize I don't have many friends here. That's a bummer. I have a fair amount of acquaintances at the AA meetings and some legit friends there too but man, sometimes those meetings are just swarming with crazy people. It's mostly who shares too. I don't really get people who attribute crazy things to God or praying. It's just going to be hard to fit in down there at the AA meetings. But, I have a desire to stay sober so I qualify. We went out to a diner the other night and it was a lot of fun. I got to talking to some people I didn't know that well until after midnight and that made it all worth it.
I don't know if that's balanced or whatever they say. My life is basically almost all work and then all music with an occasional AA outing. It doesn't feel that healthy.
I don't know what would be healthy. I'm trapped in a shit job at a shit wage. It's like that is how I am going to spend most of my hours until I die... and that is incredibly depressing. I thought buying all these music gadgets would make me happier and it has but at the same time it just becomes part of the repertoire. It feels like my ThinkPad project is complete. Like I collected all the cards I needed to win the Magic: The Gathering tournament and now it is just about performance. Maybe not quite the right analogy as I suck with Ableton and could easily acquire some (free) plug-ins and much more knowledge. I just used to love that feeling of opening the packaging and seeing what cards I got. But, I was going for a Stimming deck. ThinkPad + Steinberg UR 12 audio interface + MIDI controller + condenser mic + headphones and I have completed that setup. The good thing about an acoustic guitar is that's all that's needed. Boom. Done in one shot. No amps. No distortion (effects) pedals. No cables. |

U don't need.a fancy guitar as a learning guitar but probably worth it to spend like 300-500 for a quality boost instead of 100-200.
No idea about acoustics but probably a similar concept. Mainly at this level you want a solid wood instead of wood laminate for the soundboard...

The neck width on my electric guitar is 1.625''. That is pretty small. I have extra large hands and it is a struggle to fit all of that into the neck width and fret length. So, probably the most important for me is getting something with a bigger neck width at say 1.68''. That is only .055'' wider but I've played on some guitars like that and it just feels more comfortable. The neck shape effects things too. I think I do better with a U shape which is a little bigger versus a C shape which is a little smaller. Tiny Fender knock offs are just not for me although for practice I have to really dial things in to get good sounds which probably isn't the worst thing in the world. My next guitar will be an acoustic guitar. |
