about 25-30 a week playing and 5-10 studying. Though that average is brought down when i take a month off 1-2 times a year.

Games different but tools are better. Its more work off the tables now to do well but winrates are higher than ever when you put the time in. IIRC preblackfriday when everyone had tables ratings people were theorizing that its almost impossible to win at 4bb/100 and only the top few % could wish to scratch that, but now in 2025 you still have people pulling 8+. Obv those are for sure the best, but 4+ is absolutely achievable. More people than you'd think are still able to make 5-6. Though that some sites are harder than others especially with counting high rake like GG v few people are apparently winning pre rakeback but since they rake like 9bb/100 or something insane

I haven't played seriously in quite a while. I was regularly going to the Lodge card club just north of Austin for a number of months. Mostly when I do play it's just private games that a friend can get me into on private apps.

I became severely chronically ill for many years, beginning around 2018/2019 and through to 2024. At the worst points I was bedridden for 22 hours a day and thought I probably wasn't gonna make it. But, with enough effort, I made it through mostly. Though, I am still lagging behind in my energy, that I've learned over the course of my poker career, my very unhealthy habits of staying awake until passing out of exhaustion, regularly falling asleep between 4-7am and sleeping until 2-4pm, and generally just avoiding the sun as much as possible.... It turned out that those habits destroyed my testosterone and cortisol. Which, I never realized I had low testosterone, but in retrospect I can see that actually began when I stopped playing sports in high school and gave all that up to play starcraft.

So, I hated being sober because my body was never in a good hormonal state, so I needed to take adderall everyday just to keep myself going and not spend all day in bed super depressed--unbeknownst to me, the reason I couldn't stand being sober was because of my hormonal deficiency.

Even after the main sickness issue I was dealing with healed, my testosterone, cortisol and estradiol were all so low that I really didn't feel like I had any reason to live anymore and was actively telling others that I was ready to die. Mostly spent years and years just on the couch with no drive to do anything and not even any libido.

I've finally been making headway on this the last 3-4 months though, as I started heavy testosterone and cortisol supplementation daily, meanwhile making the commitment to go to sleep around midnight and wake up around 9 or so every day to get outside and sit facing the sun for the first 30 minutes of every day. My motivation is slowly coming back and my energy is slowly coming back.

I was always optimizing my life to be at my peak mentally around 5-9pm when most recs were getting off work and hopping online to the tables. I did that by these super late nights and waking up super late in the day, but, it turns out that had a huge cost!

Hopefully if anybody else may be in a similar situation, might benefit from knowing that.

Am doing way better now.

I am not a doctor but dopamine and testosterone (and cortisol) interest me a whole bunch. I think poker has the potential to wreck dopamine especially mixed with adderall. I know it did for me looking back. I was more of a weed / energy drink guy but it's the same idea besides adderall being worse. Then, we forget about the actual gambling for high stakes money aspect.

I guess it's an interesting dance with testosterone and cortisol. Most people, especially bodybuilders, are trying to max testosterone and minimize cortisol. The idea would be to just not get stressed out but I guess stress is inherent in human life and if cortisol is not working properly that would cause major problems. That's brutal shit man. Glad you are doing way better now.

I just use chatgpt for like everything now. These are all things I figured out through interacting with it and trying to solve my problem. It came up with an entire supplement stack for me, linked me to the highest quality supplements (supposedly) on amazon to purchase, and gave me these ideas about waking and sleeping at the same time every day, and about getting out and facing the sun for 30 minutes immediately each morning.

I don't think much of anything is certainly necessarily bad except for the really hardcore stuff like H or speed. Anything else can be balanced with proper supplementation. I drank every night for 15 years straight, then I decided I was going to quit and I stopped drinking for a year. I didn't notice any change in my physical health aside from less greasy skin! So, take that for whatever it's worth.

My issue was actually that I had super low T, super low estradiol, and also super low cortisol. Why that was I'm not exactly sure, but, I can attest that it was a feeling of truly just not caring about doing almost anything, no matter how vital it might be for my future. I definitely agree with you that stress is an important aspect of human life. It's beneficial to experience stress because that's how we grow. Like, we stress our muscles through lifting weights then as a result the muscles grow. Our brains/bodies operate very similar. But of course under too much stress we completely crumble.
