Cash game hands

One of the first things you should decide when the flop comes down is do you want to play a big pot or a small pot and control it accordingly.

On this hand we are short handed and the BB really can call here preflop since he is out of position. My preference (short handed) would be to make a pot size reraise and try to take it down.(full ring I would usually just call if the money was deep and I am out of position) When I get called on that flop the warning signs are there, but still not enough info. The turn is not threatening; however I like check, since I really don’t want to play a big pot. If I do I am likely beaten. The river I must call. He can have ax or k or bluff but the objective was to play a small pot, that I have a reasonable expectation of winning, rather then a big pot, which I rate to lose.

On this hand there are no draws on board so his check call after I raise pre and bet out is spooky. Another example of a hand that if it’s a big pot you don’t rate to win. A small one then you might or might not.(I actually think I should fold the river as I only beat a gutshot bluff)

Here is fast. I was sure he was on a big 10 and I didn’t want him to change his mind later about his hand being good. Also notice the lead out which is hard to read and makes it more likely you can create a big pot.

Since I raised pre it is unlikely that he put me on a set. The turn is a classic check raise push which can be an over pair or big draw hand. The time had come to get the money in, as there were so many cards that could either hit or spook my opponent.

The key here is to keep the story consistent. I tried to paint the picture that I just had top pair. Lead, check call turn, check river then unleash.(not so much that you get a fold)

About the last one - After you lead the flop, then check the turn, would you think anyone would bet with less than top/overpair or a pure bluff - like overcards?

Just to go through a few different possibilities.
a) He checks right after you. I'm guessing you'd throw in some reasonable size value bet on the river, hoping he maybe caught the Q with something like AQ?
b) He bets, you call, but he checks behind on the river. This is something you see on the low limits, but i guess aggression is much more important higher so you can rely on your opponents betting overpairs, top pairs etc. for value ?

The thing is, he won't bet the river knowing you flopped top pair if he can't beat it himself, right? Unless it's a stonecold bluff.

I almost never feel comftorable checkraising the river in a big pot where I know I'm ahead

I dont do it a lot but the side beauty of it is that you get some cheap showdowns on other hands

Thanks for doing these, definitely EV++. I haven't thought about that big-pot concept really in itself. I wish more of the experienced high-stakes players went through their thought process in different hands, instead of just pasting all-in scoop/bad beat hand histories. One beer on me, sir!

But people treat fraction bets as bluffs? I always assume they are "honest" bets.

I think the theory is that a giant stack of chips looks like a bigger bet.

So like a $199 (big stack) is more 'intimidating' than a $200 (two blacks) bet.

Hence ppl think when someone is fraction bet them that they are trying to bully and intimidate them to hide weakness.

I actually do not think it matters. The reason I do it often is that when on PP and you slide the bar it slides to weird numbers. Since I am usually playing 8 games I just bring the bar to approx. what I want to bet.(Not on my opening raise, sometimes not on my flop bet, but for the rest of the hand.

Could you give some insight on how the NL2000 games on Party are in contrast to PS or UB?

They're probably kindergarden compared to PS ^^ Afaik, Stars has one of the toughest games, no? And party has prolly one of the softest? ;D
