'A-' means without, of that there is no doubt. Theism is a position. Atheism is not having that position.
Carl Sagan was not a theist => He was an atheist.
Gnosis meant knowledge, Carl Sagan did not claim to have the knowledge => He was an agnostic.
If you're telling me I'm not an atheist because I can't know for sure if there is/are a god/s
then there are no atheists because none of them can, and then you can't be a theist
because there is no way for you to be sure that there is/are a god/s.
