if it were 20/(5*(2*2)) it would be 1, doesnt matter if its / or * the actions are equal so you do them in the written order

20/5 * (2*2) = 4 *4 = 16

20/(5*(2*2))= 20/20= 1

Anyways even if im wrong for some reason its stupid as fuck to even use class time on something as insignificant as this.

i thought you always had to do multiplication before division, but this makes more sense

that's the "old way" ? what other way is there. you multiple everything, then you divide, that's the order of operations. division and fraction mean the same thing

Dividing means multiplying by the inverse element (for any a we call a' the inverse element of a if and only if a*a'=b and a'*a = b where b is the unit element. Unit element is the element for which a*b = a and b*a=a for all a. Unit element of course happens to be 1 in the case of the field of real numbers) and thus multiplication and division are the same thing and they must be equal in the order of operations.

I agree this looks retarded, but the general approach to solving this problem should be emphasized. It reinforces taking a difficult problem and breaking it down into smaller chunks that are much easier do.

the M & D in PEMDAS are equals, neither takes precedent over the other so they are simply done in order. The equation reads 20 ÷ 5 * (2 * 2)
