if you laugh at that you're either really stupid and don't understand that these cats are suffering/will die soon or you're just an emotionally numb, sad case for a human being.

the version you posted was just the guy filming it with soft music playing. i'm guessing it was the owner of the cats who was filming them. he wasn't making the video to show how funny it was, he was just documenting it. he didn't make any video edits that would encourage people to laugh at it. if you laughed at it it was certainly not encouraged by anybody or any tricks related to the media, it was purely out of your own reasoning.

my point - and i'm sure we could have a very lengthy discussion about it - is that to be able to laugh at this you either have to be very naive, emotionally immature or plain stupid, or you have been extremely affected by the media we're using and the way it can modify our perception and normal emotional responses. i don't believe one second that it is a natural reaction for a healthy and sane person to laugh unless you do not have the ability to understand what you are looking at. it seems to me that you need to have lost a part of your humanity for it to be possible, which i am saying might have been caused by the media itself.

i don't believe one second if the person filming it was your friend and invited you home and told you about his cats with a rare disease, you would laugh seeing it fall to the ground helplessly. i might be wrong, you tell me!

sure a kid with down syndrome sounds sad - but randomly out of context he could say something random and it would be funny.

the cat did not exhibit anything else than the physical reaction that its disease forces. it didn't do anything funny accidentally because of its disease. the disease is simply being documented.

the little girl, on the other hand, wasn't thinking about what she was doing and ended up paying the price by being hurt. she isn't dying, she didn't kill herself. she definitely hurt herself though. to me it's a natural reaction to laugh at someone hurting himself by his own fault. it's not a natural reaction to laugh at an animal suffering from a rare disease who is very likely going to die soon (and they did shortly after that video was filmed).

your example with the kid with down syndrome is very poor. show me a kid with down syndrome doing something he usually does (just like those cats did) and i won't find anything funny about it. if you laugh at something he says you're most likely going to be laughing with him anyway. there is no out of context here... the context is very clear for anybody to see. sick cats that are most likely in pain and dying soon which happen to fall to the ground paralyzed. you should really start doubting your reasoning abilities if you have somehow missed something about this or think there can be a context in which this is humorous.

i just had this discussion about the wobblegirl video with baal. i just don't understand how you cannot see the difference between the two.

the wobblegirl video is an edit and was transformed in an humorous video. whether you laugh at it or not applies to this video only. it is not the video of the news itself for example. i can laugh at the video edit because thats the purpose of it. if i saw the news report first on the other hand i would be much less likely to laugh at it personally because its simply not (as) funny.

now if we compare the news report without the edits and the normal cat video (which would be the right comparison to do in this case), there is a big difference too because first we do not know anything about the condition the girl is in (she might be faking which ended up being the case) or it might go away. also, she still has the ability to speak so we can know exactly how she feels. because of that alone we can deduct whether she's in pain or not. the cats, on the other hand, cannot, and i believe that it is natural for us to end up feeling immediate empathy for them if we understand what we're seeing and we're perfectly sane.

the wobblegirl video is fucking hilarious. it's probably my favorite video of 2009. even if it was real, i would find it funny, because it's clever and well-made. it differs from the original news report of it which i personally didn't find funny once i saw it, and if i did i would certainly not ignore the girl's pain was i to be aware of it, but as i can laugh at my own misfortunes it only makes sense that i can also laugh at other's, at least to a certain degree. morality very often stinks and i am very far from trying to come at this from a right or wrong perspective.

the initial video was simply not funny at all and it wasn't its purpose to be funny either so it had no place here. the only reason it was posted is because highcard thought he made a clever joke to go along with it by mentioning that the cats were training for the soccer worldcup. if he didn't have anything he thought was funny to say i am very confident he would not have posted the video here.

There should be 0 discussion in the rofl thread anymore posts about the subject will result in a ban.
