i had a substitute teacher in High School who was related to Joseph hooker, lol had him a few times and every single time i had him he would tell the class that he was related to Joseph Hooker, great general of the civil war, and then proceed to tell us why the word hooker is related to him

so prostitues are really called hookers just cause of this General ?
I always thought they were called hookers as a euphenism in the sense of

girls to hang out with (hook up) instead of saying prostitues
