i had some one attempt to log on to my FTP account 5 times, he was located in USA.

I don't know if it resulted in a suspension of my funds because I had $0.00 in my FTP account at the time.

i had a similar thing happen on mansion, if you fail to log in 5x in a row - the website aotumatically withdraws all your funds as a security measure

Wow, that's really sick. And the problem is even if you have your account name / password saved so you don't have to type it in, that still isn't safe (at least Stars keeps bugging me about it, and I guess they know...)

One security measure is to type some random mumbojumbo then delete it, type shit again, delete, and only then input your data (that protects against keyloggers at least).

Up to date antispyware is also a must, imo.

Stim_Abuser   United States. Apr 19 2009 13:33. Posts 7499

heres a good post from 2+2 that im going to copy past here to help with ftp accounts getting hacked

Since all the jerks who steal moneys already know how to hack an account, this thread is for you people to learn how to protect yourself.

I know it sounds cool to say "I got hacked", but hacking is a specific term, and most of this is not hacking. There are only six ways for someone to get into your fulltilt account:

1)They hack FTP's database and servers (this is next to impossible. Note, not impossible, but next to. You'll probably have to be on site to do it)

2) Someone working at FullTilt with Database Access (and the decryption key) is using/selling passwords. This is always possible, but very unlikely. Typically only a few people will have access to these files, and they stand to make more money by being legit than they risk by being shady. Although it's unlikely, it's not impossible.

3) You installed a keylogger program (usually done by mistake. When STEALING PT3 or HM on a torrent, the people will make their own installer program that FIRST installs the keylogger, then second installs the program. Unless you have serious anti-virus and firewall protection, you're hooped. NOTE: Norton is not serious, it's crap)

4) Someone physically used your computer with a saved password (or they physically installed a keylogger. Make sure you don't leave your comp out when hosting a party)

5) Someone CRACKED your password (cracking is not the same as hacking). This is difficult, since you only get 5 tries. If someone can guess your password in less than 6 tries, you deserve to be robbed.

6) Someone watched you type your password. Be careful in public peeps.

Unless there is some new technology that no one but these money crooks has heard of yet, these are the only ways for someone to get your password, computer's only do what you tell them to do. Some advice:

Advice on making a strong password: http://www.microsoft.com/protect/you...rd/create.mspx

Secondly, don't use the same password for everything. If you like to keep it simple have three passwords. One for money (your bank and fulltilt account), one for email and other "trust worthy and secure" sources, and a third for third party private sites (like 2+2).

You money password should only be used for sites that have a very good reason to keep all passwords under lock and key. You can be 99.9% sure that no one from the Bank of America is going to steal your online password. This is a highly secure password, don't give it out.

Your emails and whatnot should use another password. You may have to give this password out to someone at somepoint, thus it should be different than your money passwords. Also make it a good one, typically don't use words: p0kerf4n is easier to guess than idD29?lll

Finally third party sites, although I would trust 2+2, there are many other sites out there that are just run by one guy with a server in his basement. You sign up to that site with your email address and a password. If you use the same password for everthing he now has access to your email account, your email account will have records of yoru Full Tilt username... you can see where this is leading to.

Hope this helps guys. I might as well write a blog about this since I just spent 20 min typing it in here. If you have any questions or input, you know what to do.

nice list stim, but i also want to add as a programmer that its possible to install rootkits and exploit security holes in software to compromise a system.

for instance if a program is written badly it will allow data to overwrite instructions on the executable stack which can be used to install software of their choice. this isnt as hard as it sounds which is why poker players should be using a firewall.

obviously the best setup is a firewalled gateway, a dedicated poker machine with specialised ruleset just for poker software (specifying ports and ips- i have the details from pokerstars, u can email them if u need it) and another computer for recreational use (skype is very insecure..., many software of net is untrusted)

I'll second keeping different passwords for different sites as good security advice. Especially make sure your email account has a very strong and unique password because if someone gets access to your email, most of your other accounts can be easily compromised. I had my World of Warcraft account stolen over a year after I quit playing because someone got into my gmail, which had the same password I used at lots of insecure online forums. They typed my email address into the wow site to get my account name, and then searched through my emails for passwords. I used the same password at Pizza Hut Online, and those fuckers sent my password in plain text. GG.

people can still log into FTP from different PC even if you're still logged in, it just takes 30sec and then disconnects the computer that's logged in

not when they immediately change the password. you get ftp to email you a temp pw, and you can log in with the temp pw, but you can't change the password on the screen that pops up as soon as you log in. an error message pops up saying that you're still logged in and doesn't complete the login.

wow that actually sounds like a huge security failure. i should have freezed the account immediately when i saw that. FUCK ME.

What I mean is if random people are coming in and out of your house all the time some of them may have Pokerstars accounts. Then if you're not around or somewhere else in the house, and your account is logged in they can transfer funds from your account to theirs. I'm not suggesting that you're friends are going to do this to you, I don't know what kind of people you invite to your house or what the situation is. I'm just saying that its a possibility.

well if the money is stolen via transfer, it should be really easy to get the money back.

the reason why it's impossible to get the money back is because the scammer chip dumps on the tables and there's no way to prove that unless they make it REALLY REALLY obvious over a very short number of hands.

Most secure in my humble opinion is running pokerstars as a user that is completely firewalled off except pokerstars servers and in a chroot jail.

On Linux of course. Anything on windows is not secure period. No, no. Not secure, period.

agreed. I tried making a firewall and got everything working except skype which wanted ALL ports opening otherwise it would only function partially (either not get all contacts on login or not be able to connect).

also another thing is adding another user which only has write access to PS for when it needs updates.

If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.

There is a neat program for OSX that monitors anything going in and out to the internet on any port called Little Snitch (http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html) - Good program. I was amazed to find that the Calculator for OS X, tries to connect to wu--calculator.apple.com on TCP Port 80.

Yeah, a calculator trying to connect to the internet. wtf? lol

I am a degen. Do not believe in any of my advice.Last edit: 01/05/2009 13:20

That is fucked up, man! You really need to have a firewall (actually you shoudl be ashamed of yourself for not having a virusscanner and fw, this day and age age, with so much spyware/adware, vira and shit everywere these days) installed , with basically all ports closed, and and a virusscanner.

With a virus scanner (constantly updated ofc), you might be able to spot these keyloggers (which it sounds like it is). And with a firewall, you will be able to block their access to you're computer, so they can check all the passwords theyve stolen. I wouldnt recommend that you deposit untill you've atleast gotten a descent firewall. I dont know which software firewall are the best, since I use my router, but Zonealarm should be pretty good, because they will obv just be able to steal any password, and new acount you create.

But to be completely safe, I would recommend that you that you just format you hdd, before playing any poker.

FU MODS, WHY ARE YOU CHANGING MY SIG!?!!Last edit: 01/05/2009 18:38

yea doesnt look like chip dumping but more like sabotage. Who would have such a beef with you? I would expect most people would try to find a way to steal the money, not just donate to random strangers.

bye now
