I think offering rice as a payment for working in a factory can be an enormous help to the people who are so poor they would otherwise starve. Not only do they no longer starve, they learn how to work to sustain themselves, and they can work to build up some real economy and become self-sustainable later.

The desert example is different, in that you're easily and cheaply able to help a desperate man, and negotiating for all his belongings would require you to be willing to let him die if he refuses. Which makes me uncomfortable. In my opinion asking any payment at all is awful in that situation.

I don't disagree with you at all. It would take an emotionless man with little to no empathy to watch the dehydrated man die. However it is no ones place to deny either party the right to abstain from a trade or charitable gift.

No one has the right to force anyone to follow your idea of "morals."

But the idea of a person doing such a thing would make me feel extremely uncomfortable about him.

I believe we are in agreement then.

You likely should feel very uncomfortable, as this man doesn't see how helping others can benefit himself and has little empathy. If he refuses to make any trade then he is benefitting more from the mans death than a trade of goods. In other words, he wants the man to die, and he wants to watch. But this is all highly situational.

ffs people its a vacation spot. can we not dismantle every little pleasure in life with these pointless debates? as if your morals would actually be steadfastly intact with 7 bombshells in front of you on a tropical island. "oh i can't plow your fun tunnel because utilitarianism says so".

if you would love to go and post "awesome!" like the rest of us, otherwise please please please tell me why for the love of god would you want to turn a piece of heaven on earth into a 7 page logical debate, that is just insanity
