Hi. I am a music major and I dont think 99% of population truly understands the difficulty of having the courage/balls to do something like this in front of your whole class, let alone kill the fucking performance like he displayed. Tons of props to the kid especially if that was his own arrangement. Not a lot of kids have the maturity and balls to sing like he just did, can't comment too much on piano since im a terrible pianist but his cover is very very very creative. A lot of good musicians I know just try to replicate a cover note per note and keeps same tempo and rhythmic element. Don't think theres anything wrong with that but it limits your creativity as an artist. Dunno what else to say but i would not go as far as to say his version was better than GaGa's. Gaga might look like an idiot but she is a genius and a really talented musician.
it's his opinion that lady gaga is a genius and it's mine that she's not, but if we put everything together to judge it as objectively as possible, i'm pretty sure my conclusion would be the winning one here. she's a popular artist, and her eccentricity (extremely shallow if you ask me) shouldn't be mistaken as 'genius'. she has no talent or intellectual gift that pushes the envelop, she's just an entertainer, with a pretty enough voice to please crowds mainly composed of teenagers and deviants.

I just listen to songs that I find good, the best gaga song is that one Cartman sings, but her version of it isn't close to that one =p
Not cool when people toss around words like genious and hate and stuff like that so easily lol. She's not even remotely close T_T
Reminds me of the youtube thread I read once about people trying to tell other people how super intelligent Paris Hilton actually was.

gen·ius   jeen-yuhs] Show IPA
–noun, plural gen·ius·es for 2, 3, 8, gen·i·i  jee-nee-ahy] Show IPA for 6, 7, 9.
1.
an exceptional natural capacity of intellect, especially as shown in creative and original work in science, art, music, etc.: the genius of Mozart.
2.
a person having such capacity.
3.
a person having an extraordinarily high intelligence rating on a psychological test, as an iq above 140.
4.
natural ability or capacity; strong inclination: a special genius for leadership.
5.
distinctive character or spirit, as of a nation, period, or language.
6.
the guardian spirit of a place, institution, etc.
7.
either of two mutually opposed spirits, one good and the other evil, supposed to attend a person throughout life.
8.
a person who strongly influences for good or ill the character, conduct, or destiny of a person, place, or thing: Rasputin, the evil genius of Russian politics
I would say a lot of famous people are geniuses. A lot of them came to fame as a result of it. It's pretty amazing how people take for granted the talent and work needed to make a "hollywood cut and paste" movie or a simple catchy pop song that's well produced. I have had a chance to meet some well known people and i don't think it's a coincidence that one of the 2 people i considered to be the best speaker/story teller just happened to be famous. He is also 100% in the top 5 most of intelligent people I've met lifetime.

saying lady gaga isn't a genius because she's nothing compared to say, john lennon is totally silly. The average person's intellect is not that high and there are few people who I would say are significantly smarter/more talented/harder workers than the average

and the word 'genius' is used for that very small margin of people, not for the likes of Gaga. your misplaced sentimentality for her and her works is clouding your judgement. she's a successful pop artist, not a genius. i'm not hating on her at all, i'm being realistic. there is no evidence whatsoever that she has above average intellect. and her musical talents pale in comparison to some people who don't even have 0.01% of her fame. it's just irritating to see you people screaming about how talented someone is when you compare them with the most insignificant people instead of the significant ones who you will most likely never come across because of your own interests precluding it. but still, it shouldn't be fucking hard to realize the difference in talent between a GaGa and a Mozart, unless you are 12 year old.

you fail to understand how luck plays a huge part in all of it. success, i mean. you seem to assume it's all about the talent or mostly about it, but it's the reverse. it's like in poker, if you are an amateur and you end up making the WSOP ME final table after entering a $1 satellite online, you have had a waaaaaaaay luckier course than most. but sure, there is some degree of talent needed to make it there, impossible to quantify -but- professionals who have made a living off poker for decades have a pretty good feeling about just how lucky this person is because they can tell by experience.
you are there, being able to move and do what you can do, at the right time, and that's all there is to it. this girl isn't more gifted in music than darvin moon is gifted at poker. but she did what she had to do and had the 'courage' of stepping through this world of fame, which not anybody could do, but its a mere trait of personality, nothing that attributes her with some special talent. the only thing that i know for sure is that she is a hard worker and very productive. we're very far from the definition of a genius right here.
the reason why pop culture should be shun upon is because for the most part it indirectly promotes inauthenticity, whether the performer is aware of it or not, they are far from being authentic when both composing and performing, their goal is TO ENTERTAIN, not to express themselves. the music lacks any sort of depth because it has to reveal itself to the listener for all it is immediately. there's no work to do, no patience to be had, no nothing left for the listener. imagine watching a movie by which after 5 minutes of the movie you already knew the rest of what's going to happen because it's so predictable and dull to you. it's the same. it's not challenging, and its entertainment value is shortly lived for me because it's essentially the same and its completely uninteresting.
there's nothing "cool" about not enjoying it. why should it be cool to be genuinely disinterested in something? it's arrogant to state that it's arrogant to have a dislike of prefabricated pop culture 'art' when there is so much beauty and authenticity in art that is always there to be explored. why waste my time with contrived music. none of this makes me arrogant, it makes me passionate, and it makes you clueless if you cannot see the difference.

Lady Gaga is part of a small margin of people who have had enormous success - YES!
Lady Gaga is part of a small margin of people who have an extraordinary high level of intellect/creativity (true and main definition of a genius) - NO!
i've watched her interviews and i can accurately judge that she doesn't display out of the ordinary intellect very easily and so should you. seems pretty clear to me that she wasn't quite the most brilliant girl in her class back in school. in fact, people who tend to have as main interest fashion will not have very high intellect, that should go without saying...
this is getting redundant - she has talent, but what she had is a lot of luck, before everything, and the main argument is that her amount of talent doesn't compare to people who do qualify as geniuses, which makes it very clear that she's not -- even when she doesn't open her mouth. her music and her whole act is very very simple and one-dimensional and very very catchy. she deserves more points than the other plastic modern pop stars because she does do a lot of her own work, but, again, we're far away from genius here, and it doesn't change the fact that she's working within a very limited framework because it is pop music that has to be able to make it to the radio/TV. the only creativity she can portray is in goofy costumes which don't display any talent, they just display that you have a lot of good designers working for you.
this is talent, perhaps even genius, and this is true creativity not working within some limiting framework. see the difference with gaga. you will most likely hate it, but just for contrast's sake:
the technique, the voice, the audacity, the complexity, everything about it. it's much more colorful than anything ever done by gaga. the room for creativity should never be limited by anything.

ummm lady gaga isn't even 1 out of 50 in terms of musical talent. there's nothing wrong with liking her, there's a bunch of stuff i listen to occasionally that i would say is pretty much crap. but she is not musically gifted at all.
not to get into the whole e-peen thing but i would be shocked if anyone here has a higher aptitude for music than me.

I think everyone "feels" their music taste is more evolved and higher than everyone elses. The reason I say that is because I feel that myself, even though I haven't taken any music classes, any education for it and still I feel that way.

go do some research on gaga.... she was accepted into julliard at age 11. For those unaware(probably 99.9% of this forum) you have to be less than top 1% in your age group in your instrument to get into julliard. And when i say age group I mean for everyone else in the WORLD that palys your instrument 6hrs a day since they were 4
niggaplz that doesnt say shit about the music that she produces now. did she become famous because she was a child prodigy? no. nobody knew anything about her at that age. a hard worker from a young age, yep, a genius, no.

I don't get the relation between julliard and musical talent. I am in the top 2% on the planet in terms of IQ, accepted into MENSA, yet I have no diploma and am a pretty fucking average poker player stuck at the micros. On the other hand, I know some RL retards who have no intellectual curiosity and who make more than my annual wage in a week of poker.
Talent has nothing to do with success. If anything, luck is a bigger factor.
