As you all know, I moved to Blackpool a few months ago. I immediately started a job in telesales but quit after the first week because I had more than a bad feeling about it (see previous blog).
A few weeks later I magically got accepted as a receptionist for a semi-posh hotel that was within walking distance and required me to dress smart! My friend had a hotel-reception job and according to him it sounded utterly easy - he would spend up to 4 hours per shift on the company phone to me just chatting random shit and singing Final Fantasy songs.
Not the case with MY reception job! Starting at 7.30am, I would race through countless non-stop tasks for 4-5+ hours before finally getting 5-20 minutes of "cool-off" period. The procedures weren't too tricky but they were innumerous and there were SO MANY opportunities for "problems". In 60 minutes I might put 5 IOIs on my manager's desk for him to sort out, since we weren't trained or authorised to do many things ourselves. Having said that, if I thought *I* was busy having to stay behind for up to an hour for many shifts, the amount of stress my two managers had to deal with was overwhelming.
We had 2 managers, 2 receptionists other than myself, and a "boss" who worked from another county and I saw maybe 3 times in my ~7 weeks. This boss was a northern woman named Tracey. For those of you who don't know what "a northern woman named Tracey" usually entails: think "STUCK-UP, BULLYING, IMPATIENT, NASTY BITCH".
I did actually think she approved of me, until she came in the other morning and said "Jonathan, we're letting you go. I want you to get your things and leave right now."
I wasn't TOO surprised; I'd heard of 5 members of staff either thinking about quitting or potentially being fired through rumour. Tracey told me, "it's not just you - i'm getting rid of a lot of staff". Great.
So here's what she had to say:
"One of the night porters has refused to ever work when you're on duty".
I cannot stress enough how much this baffles me.
"You never answer phone calls during the evening shift".
My managers have stressed that our policy is to ALWAYS answer the phone, no matter what circumstances we are experiencing. I always answer the phone, unless I am pouring a drink in the bar or am upstairs bringing someone an iron etc.
"You've only been here 3 weeks so it's still your probationary period."
I'd been there...7? 8? weeks....idk.
"I never receive the daily reports when you're on duty."
This pissed me off. I have my own printed checklist and have never EVER missed out ANY of the 4-6 daily reports we are supposed to send. I can only imagine that she confused me with the other receptionist (who recently had a stress-induced rampage and told someone they can stick the job up their ass - presumeably she has now also been fired ).
"You keep making double-bookings and are costing the company money."
Okay. I've spent FUCKING HOURS allocating rooms, editing details, filing paperwork, and trying to problem-solve over-booked periods. It is downright SICK to say this to me. I might be wrong, because the procedures/computer system are retardedly complex at times. But as far as I know, the computer doesn't allow you to actually MAKE double-bookings - you can only resolve them.
"You never should have been hired in the first place. You aren't the person I would have hired if I was conducting the interview."
Oh fucking CHARMING. If I knew what sort of boss YOU were, I would never have FUCKING APPLIED.
I came home that day and my landlord told me I had to move out within a week. He was awesome enough to find me alternative accomodation, and I moved in today. It's great, but I have no internet. Here's the funny thing, though:
My previous landlord charged me 60/week to rent a small room and he provided many memorable evening meals. This gave me 60/week spending money left over from my part-time reception job (21 hours at 5.88 - yeah, don't get me started on how England sucks for salaries. My last proper job was 5.95/hour...after an annual raise of 5 motherfucking pence. And THAT one was no walk in the park - more like choking down a log of turd every day).
However: My NEW landlord wants me to apply for housing benefit (alongside "job seekers allowance". Basically, the government will pay my new landlord all my rental costs, and also pay me 60/week. SO I'M ACTuALLY BETTER OFF NOT WORKING IN A PART-TIME JOB.
I'M FINANCIALLY BETTER OFF SITTING AT HOME ALL DAY THAN WORKING 3-4 SHITTY RETARDED STRESSFUL FUCKING SHIFTS A WEEK.
Interesting fact: In the last 3-4 years I have lived in a total of ELEVEN different places. Skater's gotta make those additional pylons.

PS: 2 weeks without internet and i come back to ...what? a shitty half assed bear meme that originated from when i was 15? i went through 6 pages of blogs on tlnet and the only one that caught my eye was about drink driving (hey i have some valid input!). apparently the tlnet horse banner is being replaced, and we are maybe a year away from swear-words being banned from the website as we cater more to "public audiences". the lpnet rofl thread , i thought i was in a time warp as the same "guy acrobatically climbing a mountain, and guy martial arting 2 townies after one slaps his girlfriend" are both on the latest page. no one has emailed me. no flux of messages. only thing of note is motherfucking WCG finals in 2 hours!!!!!!! (and apparently bisu and leta got knocked out *sobs* ) |

so ya if ive missed anything decent in the last 2+ weeks, from news to anime to music fads to starcraft (no sc2 tnx), post it here
i saw inception fyi (cinema, after turning off 3 cams after being warned by the comments), was great but sadly predictable. i expected an epic twist somewhere along the line but it was chronologically linear (although cool). |

ya i guess naz has the final word and he's as far from censorship as you can reasonably get, but a business is a business (if thats ultimately what TLnet becomes). basically, you concede to the wishes of your sponsors. so it'll be a choice between accepting and conceding to sponsors, or continuing as it is. however, TLnet has already achieved sponsorships of insurmountable amounts and respect, so conceiveably nothing will be pursuaded to change |

it was a prime time series about a group of people suspended in time until released into a post-apocalyptic world where they must find a way to survive. |

i dont know literally but i dont think u can do shit in a situation like this. they paid me for the next week and holiday pay. i met one of the managers in a bar later and he said he'd quit, so good for him. the only issue that may arise is when i try to find another job and they ask why i "left" my previous one. sucks to be in that position but hopefully you've made at least a marginal friend by then (being in reception you dont have many opportunities to make work friends ) |

Its weird. Razer seemed completely fine sponsoring TSL a while ago. The companies potentially sponsoring TL arent exactly going to want to avoid gamer-talk or alienate the forum right? So i don't see how its beneficial at all to the community. However, if a huge deal comes through and thats a non-negotiable requirement then i can see why they would take it but i really really hope they don't.
FYI i'm sort of going through the same thing you are in some respects and no disrespect intended but the last option i'd want is to work as a receptionist for min wage. I'll prob write a blog about it later as i'd completely destroy your blog if i wrote it all out right now. |

do whatever you want man, destroying each other is what keeps us on our toes.
you shouldnt though imo be able to find disrespect in someone working as a receptionist, or a builder, or a waiter, or a decorator, or a window cleaner, or a cashier.
some jobs are easy, some have nice people, some are laid back and some you can browse the internet. but the same jobs can easily be shitholes, with horrible people, terrible working conditions, insane expectations and coworkers who treat you like a turd.
ive had aprox 8 part time jobs and 2 full time jobs in my short life, and almost all of them i'd say where damn hard work, involved shitty people, and were thus respectable because of such conditions.
i would never slag off a waiter or a receptionist just for their job title. i know (especially from the teamliquid fags in america) they may be working for 10/hour doing jack SHIT with zero brain power and 20 in tips, but equally i know they may be working their ass off more than any poker player and earning just enough to keep their single lonely ass out of their parent's basement.

Oh, i didn't mean destroy as in i have bigger problems i'd want to throw out there. I just meant, it would be so long that it would completely derail your blog, few people would read it or notice it & i'd rather post something that took that long to write it in my blog. |

seriously? i dont kid when i say my friend worked in reception for premier inn and spent 4 hours on the phone to me and 2 hours playing pokemon every shift. he actually quit his job, because he skipped work a few days for family issues (without giving notice) and didnt like his bosses attitude in response to it (to put it simply) |
