Well inflation is usually easy to measure by depreciation of currency, but I guess it doesn't apply if other currencies also depreciate and its only reflected in purchasing power which isn't as practical to measure.

I'm not an expert but I thought the dollar or dxy in this case is affected by other stuff too other than relative currency strength.

From what I understand the dxy spiked higher against all currencies at the start of the pandemic due to something to do with the dollar being a settlement currency for alot of the trade/financial contracts that happens around the world.

I was also under the impression that dxy falling also had to do with the strength of emerging markets/East asian stock indices such as Vietnam and Taiwan/South Korea relative to the US as global investors invest in countries better positioned coming out of covid. (I realize those countries are not in the dxy basket)

Maybe Ket knows whether this is right or not. Like I said before I'm just learning casually.

EM currencies definitely swing around wildly relative to USD depending on market risk-on/risk-off and that in turn does crazy volatile stuff to their economies but that's more like little moons orbiting a sun. dollar def spiked higher in March vs all assets (including gold and bitcoin) for a brief "oh shi" moment when it overnight became obvious this virus is going pandemic - saw similar in 2008 GFC too. Dollar is a safe haven and goes up on flights to safety. also im not convinced anyone has any repeatable edge trading fx, certainly not me so i spend almost no time thinking about this and so you shouldn't treat anything i say about fx as likely factual (and probably should be the same even if i did claim to spend a lot of time thinking about fx)

Bitcoin has seen a real rally in the past few months, only to collapse again: In just three months, its price tripled - only to later lose almost a third again. Nevertheless, the digital currency now seems to be acceptable to payment service providers and investors.

That number is astounding.

Its important to point out that given how energy is the main expense for miners they very often produce their own energy through renewables.

Opportunity cost though, renewables could be done for something else. This is a very serious design flaw in bitcoin mining and honestly, it is rent-seeking. There are enough bitcoins out there and mining the last small % of them doesn't add anything to the currency from what i can tell?

Between 20-70% is renewable according to the site. Are there other cryptocurrencies that don't cost the world to mint or is this just a design feature in all of them? I would'nt be too suprised if there was some international agreement amoung nations to stop bitcoin mining at some very near point in the future, especially if there is another price spike, (or China specifically cracks down on it, since they are the ones using coal to mine coins).
