Hey so after some long talks with friends/family etc I find that my best option atm is to move to Canada. The future of online poker in the US is very uncertain and looks very bleak for years to come.
I'm seriously considering moving to Canada with my long time friend that goes by 4TM on LP. Anyone that knows anything about the Vancouver area and can give me info around there I'll greatly appreciate~ Thinking about finding a place near UBC I hear it's pretty bumping in that area.
Also: anyone giving me info about opening up bank accounts in Canada while not being a citizen there would also be greatly appreciated!

The idea is to try and create a network of other players trying to do the same thing as I am.
Obviously I"m going to do my own due diligence work and figure this shit out. But wouldn't hurt to have someone actually LIVING in Canada to give me some real tips as well.
also: playing live poker isn't my idea of a good living. Casinos are full of miserable degens, losers, scumbags. People who are having a legit good time there are the minority. I know wouldn't thrive very well in that kind of environment been there done that.
In terms of making enough...well i used to. That's what I'm trying to get back. |

Renting an apartment was a real pain the ass for me (and I'm a Canadian citizen). I don't know how it is for other countries but I found it pretty troublesome and a little bit invasive.
They needed
a) know how much I had in my bank account
b) credit rating
c) proof of income
d) personal references (holy fuck they actually called them too)
Its like dude... it's a crappy $1000/month apartment. You'd think I was renting a $15k/month penthouse with the all the info they needed out of me. |

Most 1BR apartments in the heart of downtown TO is like 1.5k-2k/month. Maybe TO is just more expensive than other cities in Canada? I swear anything less than 1k is just a shoebox bachelors. |

What is the fastest way for me to get a work permit in Canada?
seems like I'll need one with the research i've done so far. US citizens are allowed to stay 6 months in canada by default.
The problem is I'll probably be needing to to back and forth between US/Canada quite often because of my business venture here in the US.
But ya work permit is #1
2nd would be is there any kind of Canadian Craig's list ads (aka an online public classified forums) that's really popular and is used often to post local apartment sublets/rents available and other items and the like.

My advice to anyone who wants to move to Canada because of all this bullshit is this:
- get a part time job in Victoria, BC (Victoria cause that's where I live therefor what I know) It could be any other small, non-shitty town.
- get a room for 300-600 bucks a month
- live cheap
- play poker
- get your money right
- quit job and find a way to stay there
This is assuming you don't have much money to start with cause you got fucked. |

It would be really easy to rent a really cheap poker house with like 3 other people, just choose a good place. |

well I def won't do part time job in Canada, would be a waste of time. I have ways of squiring the necessary funds to get me moved/settled down then providing myself a suitable roll for low/midstakes
How's the weed in Victoria? ;D
and If i would to hit up Vancouver would the rent costs be that much of a difference? I really wouldn't mind splitting 800-1200 a month 2 ways. or something even more expensive 2 ways/3 ways.

Ottawa is baller, not for poker but living it is good. What else to add? hmm nothing really. It should be a fuckton easier to come here than it is to go to USA. landlords can ask lots of questions, but you don't have to answer any of them. Some big rental complexes or renting from big companies like CVL will ask way too much and even do police criminal record checks. Find spots to rent that are from tiny landlords or a condo from a single landlord. Can find that shizzle through realty brokers or kijiji/craigslist. |
|
I have learned from poker that being at the table is not a grind, the grind is living and poker is how I pass the time | |

i dont know how the work permit rules differ to us citizens, but for the students i have talked to more recently from places like india, china, etc the deal is that you or a spouse has to be studying here, and in general if you are single if you study longer, you get a longer work permit.
as for non students, i read about immigrating as a skilled laborer, but that obv doesnt apply to you, is there a third option? im not even sure. i assume there might be different rules for us citizens that i havent really looked into, and obviously since my only exposure is to students, this probably doesnt help at all. but studying while doing whatever you're doing probably isnt the worst option if it comes down to it. |

This should be doable (probably more along the lines of 3 classes), lots of chinese/japanese/korean kids at the local CC on student visas, not giving a shit.
Take some level 1 Korean class + some retarded marketing class + idk and you're good to go. |
