Hey all, a friend who lurks in LP introduced me. Anyways, we were having a discussion about grinding out a bankroll online from microstakes. I play a fair bit of NL200-NL500 live cash games and do pretty well, know my basic value betting and hand-reading and positional play. Is it worth starting with $50 online grinding NL2 up anymore? I hear the games have gotten significantly harder over the past few years and are getting harder still, so progress up from micros to high stakes are much slower than they used to be. (A skilled player 5 years ago may have made it in 6 months, a similarly skilled player now may take 2 years).

Any comments on that particular idea? I was toying with the notion of depositing online and taking it pretty seriously for a couple months as a hobby. I have a pretty addictive/obsessive nature for games, namely in the past-- starcraft, counterstrike, and most currently league of legends, so I feel like putting time and effort into it, learning the game in more detail isn't something I would tire of easily since there's a very obvious measure of how well you're doing. (Similar to the idea of rankings/stats)

Take care,
M

the skills u learn from poker such as critical thinking imo makes it worth it. i think its a fun hobby and i enjoy perfecting the craft (although i have no means anymore as i can't play online anymore).

if you are playing for money, save ur time focus on your life/education; it will serve you better

if you can crush the games then do it.

just value bet and play, be creative.

games get tougher at nl50 where u still make $100/hr.

play on sir, play on.

go ahead man deposit that 50 and start at 2nl. but if ever you get some extra money from live poker. deposit 1k and start at 50.

but all in all the games getting "harder" is relative. sure if you started 5 years ago you'd notice. but if this is all new to you, you won't. just keep learning and enjoy the game. give yourself some time if making money out of poker is for you.

Yeah just go ahead and deposit and find out if you like it. It's not like 50 bucks is a life changing amount to you if you play NL500 live. You should be able to reach NL25-NL50 pretty fast. GL HF

Totally depends on your winrate doesnt it? I'm not very comfortable playing online at all, I should say. Playing live is easy I feel because people tilt easily from bad beats and the fact that they only get a few hands an hour, so just paying basic attention and acting accordingly will print you money. Online, with the much quicker hands, decisions, and multi-tabling...a lot of the advantages are gone. So...even though I'm a live player I agree pretty heavily that online players are better. Which is why I dont want to jump into NL50 immediately =P I dont know what stakes I would crush online

Almebeast-- you think NL200-500 live's skill level is NL50 online?

I don't understand, if you play NL 500 live, why don't you deposit a bit more and start off at a reasonable limit like 10nl/25nl if you feel you're not ready for 50nl. You'll probably "learn" exponentially faster that way. Also, from my experience @ live after black friday, 200nl live skill level is about 10nl skill level online.

Lack of experience at multi-tabling, playing online, and general lack of experience of how regs online play make me a bit hesitant to start out at NL __

Maybe I'll start playing NL100 and feel super comfortable 2 tabling but most people do 6+ dont they? (6max)

if you havent played online before, play 2nl, and it should be laughable to you. as you grow more comfortable, you can make decisions from there.

NL 200 live is like NL 2 online.

Shouldn't be that hard but you just have to deal with variance faster due to a larger hand sample you will get online vs the smaller sample of hands live. I would say online starts getting "relatively" tougher once you hit NL 25. Just post a lot of hands and ask for advice when your stuck and you'll get feedback on how to improve.

Don't expect to make anything significant online for awhile. Just start for fun and once you hit around NL 50 the money will become more significant.

I have played too little live to say, but from what I've heard NL50 online is probably tougher than NL200 live.

I just think you can reach NL25-50 quickly because it doesnt that take that much theoretical knowledge of poker to beat the limits below that. Things like common sense, emotional control and discipline will be much more important. To rise above NL50 you will have to really study the game.

NL50 online is comparable to NL500+ games live in general.

NL100-NL200 games are worlds ahead of those low stakes live games. I'd say NL200 is about equal to 5/10 live although 5/10 live regs are worse in the aspect of just overall solid play but make it for it with other wierd quirks in their games.

...I'd say you get more variance live because people play more hands (and thus weaker hands) and money starts flying after some bad beats

Seems to me that if you just want to make money, playing live is much more profitable

Hmm I'll dick around and see where it goes

I would recommend depositing a roll for nl10 its less then a nl500 buyin you will learn faster for the buck. You can always drop down if you start bad. If your two tabling nl5 or 2 it could take you forever. Id say drop 300-500 play a few hundred hands at nl5 see if your fine ad jump straight up
