NL5 LAG
  Silver_nz, Aug 06 2007

So I’ve finally completed NL 5 after about 6 months and 3 sites!
Here’s my run, bulldozing the penny tables on Pokerstars:

There was some standard variance in there, a 10 buy-in downswing, but I’ve become used to it, and It didn’t really effect me at all. But because of the variance in 6-max LAG I decided to use a 30 buy-in rule. Cuz I’m a nit where it counts.

I really feel like I’ve learnt a lot playing NL5 for so long. Because there is so little at stake I have been able to experiment a lot, see what a lot of lines mean, and gain a lot of experience.

I’ve found that this 4 table loose style worked very well, I get enough information about my opponents to adapt. The looseness works because I get into a lot of situations where I can exploit the big leaks in my opponents game: the postflop leaks.

I still feel I have some postflop leaks myself, but I think I have most of the basics down. I’ll continue to gain experience and analyze hands where I feel I can improve.

I’d like to thank pav for the $25 which got me started on stars, and
Midian ,Daut and twotimesopt for making the videos where I learned how to play aggressive poker.
Also thanks to anyone who commented on my hands and gave advice, please continue to tell me how bad I am in future!

Ok, on to NL10! No retreat, no surrender (won’t move down unless bankroll somehow falls below $100)

Demolishing 6 max
  Silver_nz, Jul 09 2007

So uni finished and I'm finally getting the chance to play a little poker.
Had a small downswing on titan, was on $200, on $180 now. Been finding the games on Pokerstars more interesting, the players are better there.
Also made myself an avatar:

would this raising every hand and 3 betting you lite make you more likely to call down for your stack?? :D

I HAD been destroying PS full ring, but went on monkey tilt a little when I played before my last exam . lost about $35 in that session. I seem to be being too aggressive for full ring, and no one 'adapts' to me there.

So decided to try 6 max @ 4 tables, and I'm finding it suiting me alot better. I'd still like to go back and fully conquer full ring, but I need to take a good look at how to best exploit the leaks there.(btw if you think the best way is by setmining you are wrong. wrong wrong wrong)

stats so far for PS:

goals for me:
-keep banking at NL5 until $200 then move up.
-make an anti-tilt blog post, to get myself into good solid anti-tilt habits
-try develop solid statistically profitable lag poker as best I can
longer term after I have leveled up:
-cash out some $ to get a Cardrunners subsription for a month and rip all their vids
-transfer about $200 over to PKR poker, I think this looks like a profitable and fun site, and it would suit my style (4 tables max).
-COACHING FROM POORUSER

All comments and flames welcome Good Luck beating Luck!

:edit: and where is myth's article on excessive aggression?? I want to re-read it and I have to dig through news to find it...

Prepare for Restart
  Silver_nz, Jun 15 2007

It will soon be time to start playing poker again...

I stopped playing party poker after my downswing. I’ve been playing on Titan poker casually.

Looking back at the hands from my downswing one word comes to mind: setup.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/195783
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/195763
So I was on a bad run, but I think I am somewhat to blame too. Its part of what I do to be able to get away from these setups and fold. I also picked a bad time to play, when the tables were full of tight regulars.

Also I think I was in station mode after playing aggressively... not give people the respect they deserved.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/204032
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/195834
But also.. I’m a newbie

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/204285 donkey is me

I kept playing when I was losing money. Consciously I was checking myself for signs of tilt and I tried to play through it. I really hate leaving a losing session, I want very strongly to win.
Its something I will let go in the future and just quit when I start getting emotional at all.
The classical music idea is a good one I think!

OK! Anyway, I’ve been running pretty well at Titan, games there are just delicious.
8 tabling NL5

I feel very confident I can beat NL5 on any given day, but NL 10 is giving me trouble. Attempted to move up twice, but setups, bad beats and then trying too hard to have a winning session knocks me back down.

Also the players there are a lot nittier than NL5. Suddenly C-betting is my biggest form of income. Still they are fairly passive, letting me hang myself on their sets. My style from NL5 just seems to be getting me stacked, (ironically with an almost exactly inverse winrate )
I’ll need to review hands and figure out the best way to adapt my play to these stakes in a future post.

ALSO

Thanks to MR.PAV I am now I pirate of pokerstars. For getting 2nd in his competition I was awarded $25.

Not sure if I’ll get back to titan poker now :D stars is just too goood. Ground it up to $36

Anyway, its study week at the moment, so I’ll concentrate on Exams. But in a few weeks, holidays!, and I think poker will be on the top of my list.

I'm just playing scared now, and making bad post flop decisions.

Crash Back Down
  Silver_nz, May 17 2007

Well, I've manged to donk off half my bank roll now... good times.

Situation was this: its Monday, I want to go build my roll at NL5. I find the games infested with weak-tight nit-tastic regulars (yes, I know its NL5, but they really are there). So I tried to think how to beat weak tight players.

So tried laggin it up in short handed games.

had moderate success to start with.. trusting my reads I made some sick bluffs,
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/1947317

and after I had been hammering the table, got some of them to play back at me and made some sick calls, making very good money.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/190083

basically I tried to represent every flush to push them off their over cards, raised over their c-bets with air on dry flops, and folded if I didn't have 2 pair of better to beat their overcards.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/194727

but somewhere along the way I lost it a bit... started to think people were playing back at me too much, started bluffing too much.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/193347
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/189102
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/194737

And just playing stupid
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/189847

basically just leaking money very fast into the tables, and (along with a few more bad beats than usual), I was down 10 buy-ins.

being a lagtard maniac was certainly interesting and fun. when it worked, it worked beautifully, but when its bad, its very bad.

I'll be back to my grinder game now.. and I'll only play on weekends when there are fish about.

Aiming for a good solid 3bb/100.

The basics
  Silver_nz, May 05 2007

Poker tracker is great, I feel that I'm really developing solid ABC play now.

By looking at my own hands, I can see which ones are leaking for me. I’ve cut out Ax, KQo, AJo completely as they just leave me in murky situations. Cut back on the suited connectors, playing them with position. Been cutting down on my calling alot too, its mostly either raise or fold now, playing this way just makes things clearer.

I’m playing just 2 tables and getting awesome reads on my opponents play styles, making hardcore notes and such.

Definitely helps me feel a lot more comfortable on these tables, I know pretty much what I am up against when I play a hand now, its leading to a lot fewer mistakes.

Once I’ve Identified a player’s type, for example nit or caller or (rarely) over aggressive monkey, it’s a lot easier to put them on a hand.

I’ve been playing around with poker tracker's auto rating too, its fun. I know I should just rely on raw data (and I do) but pictures are pretty.
As I have tightened up my game, my rating changed...

And now it has changed again and I am rated as tight aggressive, boo-ya

I'm still a losing player though , but I did unlock the +$25 party bonus, so I'm in a comfortable spot to play from.
BR:$52.08

some hands:

Good:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/186790 Think this hand went how it was supposed to. Opponent was a rock. Maybe could have bet more on river... not sure how to extract fully.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/186191 gotta watch those 2 pair on a paired board... but I got it in before the board paired, so I think this was played correctly

Bad:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/186787 maybe I'm too aggressive.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/186778 This hand is educational I think. a classic line is there, flat flop then raise turn. But I missed it cause my hand just hit. I must pay attention to whats happened when I get raised, him hitting a Q is not the most likely hand here.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/183806 OK, now this hand I want to remember. DON'T SHOVE WITH 2 PAIR WHEN THE BOARD IS PAIRED.

Ugly:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/183815
LOLLLLLL best starting hand in poker.
...
ok, yeah, I won't do this again. >_>

Ok, time to go out and get more experience by killing fish. I want to level up you see

2nd life
  Silver_nz, Apr 27 2007

So I got on the party poker wagon just in time, and now the titian poker promotion gives me another chance at poker should I donk off all my party chips. whoo-hoo!

love you meat and naz and all those who run liquid poker.

BUT I don't want to donk off all my party chips, so todays topic is:

finding the gigantic leaks in my game with poker tracker.

this is a bore-tastic record:

$0.02/$0.04 game on party

sample size: only 1000 hands... lack of accuracy likely

VPIP 19% PFR 8% total agg 1.5

pocket pairs total: -$6.55

suited connectors: +$9.36

off suited Ax KQ etc: -$4.46

play from Blinds: +3.00

so, from this basic analysis, I think I'm a calling station based on that agression factor. got to get big or go home.
I think my Preflop calling range is okay at 18, especially seeing as suited connectors seem profitable, I'd like to keep playing them.
I could tighten up by perhaps not playing Ax and KQo kind of hands as they seem to be getting me into trouble.
I should probably raise more preflop to disguise hands like suited connnectors... but there are always a few callers, and you can't really bluff them off on the flop I've found.
I felt like my blind play was fairly spewy, but apparently I'm up there, so who knows... maybe it was just one big hand i got lucky on. sample size is really too small

In other news, went and played at a poker party last night. before the game we had a fun pot-luck dinner with all kinds of weird food coming out like Mussels

and Russian salad

and sushi and such.

then on to the $5 buy-in winner takes all tourney. 10 players, I got knocked out by my inability to change my line after I get a read. I saw my opponent get all excited by a straight making 7 on the turn, but I still bet out when he checked to me. haha, gotta get more reliant on my reads, re-evaluate the hand every time its my turn.
but I've won that tourney 2/5 times, so not too bad.

But I think this is the important thing... I've got to be less rigid and re-evaluate the hand each time it is my turn to act. I think this kind of rigidity is what is leading to my calling station spewing.

big thanks
to locoo for offering to obs a few tables with me and lend me his 5NL dominating experience.
to twotimesopt for digging up dauts poker vid. and also to daut for making the vid. great stuff.

Ok, that is all. Good luck my comrades in poker.
