Real-World Funds Allocation by TampaBayMat, May 17

I guess I'll just spill everything here? lol.

Approximate balances in each at the end of this week:

Checking: $1.8k
401(k): $1.5k
Online Poker: $2k
(the obvious thing missing is a Savings account): $0

Total: 5.3k

Work Income: Varies since I’m full-time hourly + earnable monthly bonus. I set 10% of my work check aside (pre-tax) for my 401(k) ~ $250 monthly [note: my 401(k) does not do matching].

Approximating this ~ $1900 monthly (take home)

Online Poker: Started with $200 in February, grew that to ~$2750 in 3 months, cashed $600 out last night to put in my checking account. Graphs/Data of results (cash games not included, but also insignificant): http://imgur.com/nRZmW My aim for the time being is to keep $2k in this account. So… as I continue to make money, I’ll be cashing out back down to $2k regularly until my checking account to poker account ratio becomes more appropriate.

Tough to say how often ill be able to make withdrawals like this. Lets approximate $600/month.

Fixed Expenses (monthly):

Rent + Utilities = ~ $575
Phone: $50
Car insurance + Car payment: $200

Total Fixed Expenses: $825

(Monthly Income + Poker Withdrawals) – Fixed Expenses = $1675

I have no idea what my approximate monthly Non-Fixed Expenses are (gas, food, going out, girlfriend, etc…), but at my worst, I can’t be spending more than $500-600/mo (sound reasonable?)

So what should I do in an effort to save money/accumulate wealth with this extra 1-1.2k monthly? Any tips on how to adjust my current situation (the fact that my 401(k) doesn't match is a bit concerning to me)? Also, how should I handle the distribution of my poker account to checking/savings accounts..what seems like an appropriate ratio between the accounts?

Any semi-pro/pro poker players comments on this would be great.

Hockey question by Kapol, May 17

Hey,

I'm not interested in hockey, but there's one think that bothers me, now that I've stumbled upon an article regarding the World Championships, which are taking place at the moment.
Do the USA and Canada send the very best players to compete in major international tournaments (aka Basketball's Dream Team), or do they just send some mediocre guys who may or may not win the title? What about the very best players from other nations, like Russia and Sweden?

Some entertainment:

http://www.timesoccer.com/video/03/15...ester-city-live-match-highlights.html
Skip to 25:00. Manchester City vs QPR - last game of the English Premier League season. City is down 1-2 and with only 5 minutes of injury time to go and they need 2 goals to win the title. Incredible.

WSOP 2012 action by sTrAtO, May 16

The WSOP 2012 is a couple of weeks away and I can't wait to be in Las Vegas for my second series. Everything about it has me really pumped up and I'm looking forward to do well. I have good expectations for this trip and hopefully I'll run good in many of them.

I plan to play 17 events during this series, including the Main Event. Here's the full list of them:

1.Sun 3-Jun: Event #9B $1,500 NLHE
2.Thu 7-Jun: Event #16 $1,500 NLHE 6max
3.Sat 9-Jun: Event #19 $1,500 NLHE
4.Sun 10-Jun: Event #21 $1,000 NLHE
5.Sat 16-Jun: Event #31 $1,500 NLHE
6.Sun 17-Jun: Event #33 $1,000 NLHE
7.Wed 20-Jun: Event #38 $1,500 NLHE
8.Fri 22-Jun: Event #41 $3,000 NLHE
9.Sat 23-Jun: Event #43 $1,500 NLHE
10.Sun 24-Jun: Event #44 $1,000 NLHE
11.Mon 25-Jun: Event #46 $2,500 NLHE
12.Thu 28-Jun: Event #50 $5,000 NLHE
13.Sat 30-Jun: #Event #53 $1,500 NLHE
14.Sun 1-Jul: Event #54 $1,000 NLHE
15.Mon 2-Jul: Event #56 $1,500 NLHE
16.Wed 4-Jul: Event #59A $1,000 NLHE
17.Sab 7-Jul: Event #61A $10,000 NLHE Main Event

I'll arrive to LV on June 2 at noon and stay at a department in the Jockey Club with some friends and come back home on July 17, right after the Day 7 of the Main Event is over.

In order to be in the best possible shape, emotionally and phisically, I've been going to the gym for the last month and have tried to eat as healthier as possible. I hope I can stay on pace during LV although it is going to be very difficult.

Selling pieces of me
The total amount of buy-ins equals $37,500 USD and I'll sell 35% at 1.05:1 of this package:

So far I've sold 16% so theres 19% left
1% = $393.75
3% = $1,181.25
5% = $1,968.75
10% = $3,937.50

I'm hoping to do well in the saturdays $1.5k events so If I manage to do that, I won't be playing the $1k's on Sunday so you can be sure I will send back every money I don't get to use, obviously including the 5% mark up you send.

Taxes
As far as I know, mexicans get taxed for 30% in cashes over $5,000 after the buyin. Ex: I cash $20k in the ME, the amount of taxes for this price is $3k: $20k-$10kbuyin = $10k*30%=$3k so the total amount I'd receive in this case is $17k.

EDIT: I read other post about taxes being taken from $5,000 after profit, so if that is the case and taking last example, the amount of taxes would be $1,500 and not $3,000. ($20k-$10kbuyin=$10k-$5k=$5k*0.30=$1,500). Wish I could know EXACTLY how this works though

I was also told that you can fight/receive back your taxes so in the case we win something big, I'll give back your share of them after I received them.

Even with it, I still think it's an +EV situation and be sure I'll play my best cause I got 65% of my action.

In the case you wanna buy a share of me, I would love to receive the money on Stars.

Bad luck? by R3m3mb3rM3, May 16

Is it allowed to think in terms of luck? Cause I had a lot of bad luck today alright...

Even though I quit playing Hyper speed Sit & Go's which helps a lot with that preflop allin shit (thanks for the tip guys, I thought everyone grinds Hyper before I read otherwise in the comments ^^ ), theres still plenty around. And even though I know I have the better hand, I have this feeling I shouldn't call. Because every time I do I get punished hard. Losing KK to Q 7 feels tough man.. specially When you go out as third unpaid. (a lot of "I"'s up there, sorry not a native English speaker)

Oh well I have the feeling I make the right choices and overtime it will pay. As for my 10$ - 1000$ challenge I'm doing it step by step and after 4 sweaty hand days of poker I broker 50$ today. I just lost one to 46$ but the mark has been broken anyway.

Hoping I continue making progress. The first 3 days Ive felt I learn more and more by hand. This day was kinda playing my game and luck will decide the rest. Hopefully Ill learn more tomorrow.

PS: K9 suited is my favorite hand and never lets me down.

Vegas comps? by NewbSaibot, May 16

Having never stayed at vegas before, how do these "room comps" and stuff work? I'm likely going to spend a week there next week or so and hear you can get discounts from your room for playing in their casino, sort of like a VPP system. I'll just be playing NL200 and maybe NL500 depending on success. If the comps dont really cater to low stakes players than am I better off just finding whatever I can afford and commuting to the casino?

FYI - I really want to stay at the Aria, or any comparable hotel like the Bellagio next door. Otherwise I just plan to stay at the Luxor which is like 5 blocks down and 1/3 the price.

And you know what I mean.. by Gawuss, May 15

For a long time I’ve been and still am struggling with a decision to make a huge change in my life. To escape. Anywhere. I do love having people around but I think I could use some me-time to rethink my life, whether I should be with this girl, I love her very much but do I want to pursue it ? Or if I really think poker is a good career to go after. I want to explore the world and myself within it. Where do I belong ? What do I really want and need ? I need adventures, I need experiences, I need new people. I need a best friend. I may have many friends but none of them would I consider my so called BFF. I think that for now my girlfriend is my best friend and I like the way this is but what if it ends ? What then ? She won’t be there for me even though I’ll make sure to always be there for her.

Fuck.

I imagine many of you have had similar thoughts throughout your life and most probably haven’t got to the point where you knew THIS IS IT, THIS IS WHAT I WANT AND WHERE I WANT TO BE. I’m about to turn 21 and hell yeah I’m young wild and free but not exactly… There is this ENORMOUS barrier that blocks me from the world. And it obviously exists in my mind. I’m in the middle of figuring out everything and I guess it’ll never stop. Each day teaches you something about yourself even when you spent it in your bed. You can’t stop learning. Actually, it gives me pleasure to be aware I’m constantly becoming a smarter/wiser person.

I’ve always had that dream to embark on a lone journey and meet a stranger in a pub. Then, without revealing names or anything, tell him/her each and every secret from my life. Just let myself feel completely free and careless and do what my heart tells me to.

That’s just a draft made on the spur of the moment and those 3 beers I’ve just emptied.

And I’m sharing it with you guys, whatever. I believe you have gone or are going through this too so you can truly relate to it and maybe also write something to free your mind, please do

To make this blog entry look more pretty I'm posting 2 songs, make sure to check them out

Have a good night,

Mike

Loveing the trashtalk! by R3m3mb3rM3, May 15

After another day of Sit & Go's I got flamed really hard from some random Czech who slow played AA until I hit my third jack on the river. He called me Nazi, donk noob and it... was... awesome! He then continued to tell me how much money he makes with poker. apparently he lives from it (playing 1,50$ Sit and Go's?). So I decided to take a look in some of his stats. And he didn't look too professional:
http://i.imgur.com/3NUgu.png

For myself and my 10$ to 1000$ challenge. I'm making slow progress but I feel I'm getting better at reading and poker theory. I currently have about 30$ which I'm quite happy with, even though its of course nothing to most of you reading this

I stopped playing Hyper Turbo tournaments which helps a lot too. Specially helps me stop raging about preflop Allin bad beats.

Thanks for reading have a good day!

Falling behind by thewh00sel, May 15

I've been pretty lazy this month, both in blogging and in playing. I started out well with a nice little 5k upswing in the first few days, but then I stopped putting in a lot of hours. On Friday and Saturday I had a confidence-deflating couple of days. I played a few hands poorly that put me in tough river hero-call spots. I called all 3 and lost all 3. That equated to about 6k worth of river calls all going the wrong way.

I think getting myself into those call-down river hero spots has been a big leak in my game for quite some time. I just can't help myself...the feeling of scooping a big pot to a river bluff is just too satisfying. Really trying to work on it though by getting more aggressive and avoiding the passive lines that seem to creep into your game when you play too much live poker.

These annoying pots resulted in an early end to my Saturday night session, followed by Sunday and Monday off from poker to get my mind on something else. We had a relaxing Mother's day, complete with swimming and vegging out. We even watched the series finale of Desperate Housewives to cap off the day...IT WAS MOTHER'S DAY DON'T JUDGE ME. I haven't seen a ton of the episodes but I thought the ending was kind of lame...ok let me put my penis back on and get back to poker...

Today is the halfway point of the month, and I've only put in 58 hours, which puts me well off the pace of 40 hours per week. Pretty terrible, but given that the WSOP is coming up and I'm going to be grinding like a madman, I'm not going to be too hard on myself for not playing much; especially when I've been making bad/questionable decisions at the tables. It's probably best that I took a few days off.

Truthfully I don't feel much like playing today, but I think that's a function of having a couple days off to relax, and the amazing weather we've been having, so hopefully sitting down at the table will kick-start my focus. I'll need to average almost 8 hours per session if I stick to my normal schedule of taking 2 days off per week to hit the 160 hour mark for May. My current average session length is 6.9 hours...Hopefully I can pull it off.

I tried a little PLO-HU by Joe, May 15

http://i.imgur.com/z91Bn.gif

The variance was huge, in the beginning lost loads due to runbad, then got some of it back. Was fun though + won 287 EVbucks, so all is good

I played like 7 different opponents, 3 fishes and 4 regs (i guess). Felt good in all of the matches, I think I was outplaying my opponents in 5 cases, in those other two I guess it was about even. Obviously just my feeling.

I basically played just to accelerate my PLO learning process, because after 2.5 months of PLOLing 6-max I still kinda suck at it. My red line (= non-sd winnings) is terrible and so are my results from the blinds and utg. So I decided to try some HU to work on that. If you PLO guys have any tips on where to look for leaks and how to learn to fix them, please post in comments.

Joe
