Well... I've made a lot of progress. I've finally got to where when i get really tilted I don't decide that it's time to jump up 3 levels.

I was playing on Cake. The bonuses and rakeback were nice. I usually have to play on off hours though, so the table selections at NL10 were pretty wretched unless I wanted to wait in like 30 minutes and mix 6max and FR. In an effort to get the best of both worlds, as well as really get bankroll management engraved into my thick skull I divided that NL10 roll into two NL5 Rolls.

I deposited at Pokernordica for 30% rakeback, 100% bonus of my NL5 roll. I deposited the other NL5 roll onto Pokerstars the day before they announced the new bonus. This has allowed me to play at Pokernordica when the games are good and then Pokerstars during the off hours.

So far at Pokernordica things have gone well. I'm up 8 buy ins over a couple thousand hands.

However at Pokerstars, where I have done most of my playing. I Can't beat NL5. It's incredibly frustrating, as I'm sure you're all familiar with.

I first deposited, lost 10 buy ins in 3k hands. Actually moved down to NL2(making progress) and beat it pretty well. Last night I moved back up to NL5 @ 20 BI, since then I've played 1k hands lost 8 buy ins. It's incredible. I just hate it. I almost want to earn a few more buy ins at Pokernordica and then withdraw damning by bonus just to skip NL5 at PS...

lol beating NL2 for 10bb/100 and losing at NL5 at -35bb/100 mostly 6max. and I'm running 21/17/2.5

How standard is that NL5 downswing? I'm sure I've started to play horribly because it's destroying my confidence... I felt more confident at NL5 8 months ago when I made my first blog as a complete fish. If I made a video would anyone both watching it? lol

Thanks for reading...

edit: I also just got a DC subscription and HEM for my bday from my GF... I definitely like HEM > PT3 and DC is sick so far...

just some advice dont take it the wrong way

u need to stop playing and rethink/study your game

nl2/nl5 is terrible - the "downswings" are coreleated to skill level.
if ure a solid winning playing u will never have a serious downswing of any impact

i think nl10 is the most retarded stake i have ever played
nl25 makes way more sense to be honest, esp 6max

have you never had a downswing? you can drop 10 buyins in an instant.. im sure plenty of sick players had insane downswings, obviously no actual downswing in this case

losing 20 BI like that in nl5 just sucks. you may want to reanalyze your game or something, but yeah. sucks man.

lol. I disagree with your analysis of my situation greatly. I may not be learning very quickly but I am learning. That's why I am playing NL5 now? To learn Cheaply? I also disagree that solid winning players never have serious downswings.... I will concede that the greater your edge the tighter you standard deviation....

I also have no delusions of being a winning player. I will say that I have played against bankroll management plenty and done infinitely better at NL10, 25, and 50 than I am doing at NL5 right now. This does not mean that I am playing well. I'm sure I'm not and so I am analyzing my play.

i'll point you to this thread:

he doesn't take my advice lol eventhough he needs it

"I probably could tighten up my range a little, but most of my big drops are losing big hands vs sets, so I dont see tightening my range helping alot there..."

that's just bullshit people say when they're losing.

anyway maybe try my advice it might help you. you're doing nicely on NL2 and should be able to reach NL5 with a bit of thought/practise... NL2 -> NL5 is a MUCH bigger skill difference than NL5 -> NL25 imo because random fish that want to gamble usually just select lowest limit and donk their money away. whereas NL5 players selectively choose that limit. NL2 is almost like play money

If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.

Hmmm Thanks for the advice. I'm already doing a lot of it. I do need to pay more attention to the effective stacks preflop when it gets to me opened. I also think I overvalue TP and MP in a HU pot. I also agree with your analysis of NL2 -> NL5... I do think one of the reasons my results in NL5 so far have been so bad is because I go into it with the NL2 mindset as opposed to the mindset I've had in the past playing NL25... Thanks for the words.
