live trip report
nolan, Jun 16 2007
so, the live card club in boston was sick as i was foretold. there's only two tabls but they seat 11 or so and they're really sick tables. they don't have electric card shufflers like foxwoods but they were really nice felt and wood grain i liked them better to be honest. they were also alot larger and just generally more comfortable. there was leather couches spotted all around and 3 huge flatscreen tv's with poker channels and scorcese movies on, it was pretty fuckin' cool to say the least.
security was real tight though, and i got the 3rd degree at the door, which was interesting. thing is if you drove up to the place you'd really never have a clue what it was like inside. it was pretty surreal. they also had free drinks/food which included sandwiches made to order haha, i was pretty floored at how proffesional the place was run.
anyways, on to the poker.
the player pool consisted of 3 or 4 old timers, a few well known drug dealers, and a few middle-eastern guys who i'm pretty sure own a food business in town. there was also a guy who i think runs a local sub place. the skill level ranged from bad to fucking horrendous, and as per usual the preflop raises ranged from $10 to $25 to occasionally $100 at a 1/2 game with a 150bb max buyin.
one of my first hands at the table i was dealt AA on the button and UTG made it 7 and a player I know from another live game who's really aggressive and ballsy and pretty decent called from MP. I made it 35 to go and UTG called. The flop came T72 with two clubs and I bet 50 when checked to me. The guy thought for a bit and folded. The table seemed pretty upset that I didn't show my cards (I believe cards had been shown every hand up until then). A few hands later I was dealt TT on the button again and 3 or 4 choadbrono's limped so I raised it up to 15. The player in the big blind, one of the old timers who seemed to be the least bad out of everyone minraised... Great. I called for set value of course and the rest of the table folded. The flop was a pretty sketchy KQT. I felt really shitty about this because with the minraise and the guys apparent tight play up until this point it was pretty clear he had AA KK QQ maybe JJ. He led for 40 and I thought awhile and flatted deciding to see how he'd react on the turn. The turn was the 4d and he hesitantly bet 50 into me. At this point I had like 120 behind and I thought a call could be in order, as at this point I was really confident he was on either AA or JJ, he just seemed generally uneasy about his hand, but I couldn't decide whether or not he could fold Aces and thought maybe getting it in now would be best. He thought for quite awihle when I shoved and eventually mucked face up: AA. I was pretty impressed but he did say he was pretty sure I musta had two pair which I guess isn't a bad read as that board is awful for AA. I ran card dead for awhile, then picked up TT again in the cutoff. There were a few limps and I made it like 17 to go preflop and was met with one caller, a super old timer who seemed borderline senile, however he was only playing maybe 10% of hands at most so I didn't think he was a total dope. The flop landed KJ6 with two clubs and I cbet for 25 when checked to me. He reluctantly called and the turn came a wonderous Td. He checked to me again and I bet out 75 not really knowing what to put tightass on. He said "Not sure your hand is good but I got to respect the play" and mucked face down but later said he had a shitty flush draw which sounds about right. For the next hour I had abunch of semi-ok hands to call raises with but bricked out on most flops. Later I was dealt A3 clubs on the button and it limped around to the cut off (literally everyone limped) who made it $10, obviously I called but the semi-decent player who mucked AA earlier made it $35 from the BB. There were two other calls so I figured fuck it since I was at this point deep wtih all people involved and threw in the green guy to take a flop. The flop was AJJ and it checked around to me, but I figured WA/WB and checked it back. The turn came a 3 and it checked to the CO who bet $200 into a $125 or so pot. Obviously everyone turbo mucked and he tabled JJ. Brilliant. I picked up a few small pots with BS c-bets and was starting to get tired and hungry so I called my little bro to pick me up. The last hand I played was KQ hearts, making an EP raise and getting a few callers. The flop came a nice QT7 with two hearts. I led for ~PSB which was something like $25 and got one (hesitant) caller. The turn was an offsuit seven and I could tell by my opponent (who was one of the shittier weak/tight old timers) that he wasn't super pumped about his hand. I bet $50 hoping to squeeze value from what I presumed was QJ, Qx or maybe an AT type hand. I also considered a lower FD a possibility. Again he hesitantly called. the river came an offsuit four and I decided my hand was best and so bet $100 for value. The guy thought for like literally 2 minutes (I was about to call the clock on him) and he finally called, showing KQ spades. Son of a bitchhhh. I only netted just under a buyin but it was a pretty good time and I'll probably head back someday if I'm in town.
but to be honest, live poker with strangers really isn't that fun. I got bored quick and it's probably good that I left early. My buddy I went with was stuck like 400 when I left and he just txt msg'd me saying he was in for 600 but sitting on 500 so hopefully he pulls through a win by the time he leaves, which will probably be 6am. He's like a live grinder and hits up a different card club every day of the week on top of working a full time job. He is like totally fine putting in 8 hour live sessions and it's definitely something I can't do. I'm such an internet donk.
Oh also, I witnessed someone call a $350 bet on the river of a four flush board with a set... Yeah.. Live poker = 25ptbb/100 profitability.
Sorry for the mega long post, thought maybe people find these live reports interesting and if anyones in the boston area hell maybe they'd like to hit up the game.
Take it easy,
Sean.
LOAN COMPUTER BLUES
nolan, Jun 16 2007
Hey all,
I just had two losing days in a row!!! Well, maybe two in a row if I don't play anymore today but I don't think I will so probably two in a row.
It's obviously because this loan computer is tilting me since my last one exploded. The parts for the one I'm going to build should be coming in next Tue-Thu and I really can't wait. Having dual monitor set up for the first time is going to be cool too and because of it I'll probably go back to full ring... we'll have to see. I played full ring today and it seemed really soft until the regulars got sick of me playing like 28/23 and turned off their fold buttons. I only ended down $50 but I kind of made one bonehead move on a guy I thought was getting frustrated with me. He probably was frustrated with me but you can't make people lay down nut full houses .
I'm heading down to Boston later tonight to play some 1/2 live most likely. It's at a card club I've never been to before but my buddies all say it's "nicer than foxwoods." My friends aren't the type to really exaggerate like that either so I'm really intrigued to see what it's like. Rake is also $1 for every $20 in the pot and capped at $5 which I think is pretty reasonable.
Other than that things have been going OK. I'm having trouble getting into contact with the people at PokerTracker about registering on my new computer. The guys from PAHUD said my e-mail is probably filtering them as spam but I don't believe this is the case as I have received emails from them in the past. I'm really confused about it. If anyone knows anyone working for PT or has a forum login that you could use to send them a PM on my behalf please PM me here or AIM/MSN me if you got the name; I'd really appreciate it.
Also, just a word on advice I give in some of the forums. Lately it gets really poorly received as I sometime advocate folds and minraises that people don't agree with. I hope this isn't frustrating or upsetting to anyone that I would like to play in a different fashion from what they perceive as "correct" but I do have a reason behind the suggestions I make and anyone is welcome to PM me and ask me to sort it out in detail if there are any questions. I'll try to post with a little more detail in the future.
SEE YA LATA KIDZ
JUNE ISNT WONDERFUL ANYMORE
nolan, Jun 11 2007
Hey all,
My computer which is straight outta 2002 finally bit the dust I think. I'm not sure if it is a virus I contracted or what but it will not boot anymore and that's that. Sucks because I didn't really back up any of my PT db's onto removable storage but whatever...
Anyone who mighta got any files from me recently even mp3's or whatever might want to run a few scans on their CPU just to be safe, although I'm pretty sure the thing is just fried and old . It's really bizarre timing because I got a bunch of parts set to arrive in a few days and I'm building a new computer . Got my monitors from PS a few days ago so I'm gonna be all set and good to go.
Damn computers are frustrating. So anyways, If you don't hear from me for awhile, this is why.
Take it easy. In the meantime I'm going to be practicing BW at the computer lab at my University in the time I would normally be playing poker so prepare to get gosu'd Nada style with your speedlings chumps.
P.S. If you live near the beach you should go today, some people never see the Ocean man, think about it.
June is wonderful?
nolan, Jun 10 2007
Went to one of my brothers' high school graduation the other day. It was really depressing being back in the Boston area and seeing people I had been doing a pretty good job of wiping from my memory. It was cool hanging out with old friends though even though we really didn't do much. My parents were really happy to see me and it was nice seeing them as I really only get the opportunity every month or so.
My father has been a police officer for I believe 28 years and he's retiring very soon. It's really weird. I'm very proud of him and I've really never been more happy for him. I think it's such a huge accomplishment, raising children. I'm so afraid for the day where I'll have to do it. I think it will be really hard to out-do the care my parents provided for my family. Like Fishburn says in Boyz in the hood: "Any fool with a dick can make a baby, it takes a real man to raise his child." I gotta think of something really great to buy him since he happens to retire on Father's day. Suggestions?
As far as poker goes, I seem to start every month off on a sick heater, then run stagnant or bad, then end on a sick heater, and June is no exception. I have only played like 3.5k hands of ring on PokerStars as I have been playing alot of heads up on Full Tilt and running kind of blah. I've also played a tourney session here or there to replace a cash one with obviously poor results so that is affecting my total hands. I think I'll be getting back into playing 1.5-3k hands of six max or full ring daily however.
This morning I won a pretty sick pot and was put to a pretty tough decision, I think I'm going to post it up without results but if you search my hands you can find it .
Ahh, I need to catch some sun and hit the gym. Hope you are all doing well.
Oh, small sample size but I'll brag anyways:
Unfortunate all the bad beats I've had, or I'd definitely be running better than 18ptbb. Although, I think that if you took out the hands where I get real lucky, 18ptbb probably becomes my sustainable six max winrate.
June !
nolan, Jun 03 2007
Played like three session today and did really well. Just tied up a session that went like this:
My two sessions from this morning actually went a little better. June's off to a ballin' ass start. It's unreal how ridiculously lucky I got today. Set up a bunch of people and had some mega donations from the guppies. I like having standout days like this because they help me pull through the really bad stretches. I was playing breakeven poker for the last week and it was starting to irk me a little so this is a great break from that trend.
Enough about me though, I was browsing some of my favorite hot jam sites and came across this ill jam:
Termanology - So you wanna be harcore
The jam was real tight, and the name of the MC really stuck out to me. I decided to check him out on Wikipedia, and the guy is from my hometown! I was pretty shocked. The pic of him is the style of dress that like everyone in my old neighborhood rocks too it was a pretty LOL moment. I remember this guy from when I was younger trying to become a rapper and thinking it was a little LOL but it appears he really made it. I'm happy for him and it's cool that a guy from my 'hood is out there doing it. Mass. isn't known for putting out much good music and being a big music fan I'm really happy about this.
I also checked out a Lil' Wayne song, I'm really not much of a fan of his but this song is really experimental and I think it's cool too see him messing around with different styles. This song is weirdly uplifting and depressing at times if you listen to the lyrics. Lil Wayne new hot fire!
Beyond all that, I'm just balling it out in my new place. Some friends of mine who recently graduated my University just moved into the area, we went out for a few drinks tonight and it was a really nice time. The bar scene in my new city is really pretty sick. A lot of really posh places with balling ass leather couches everywhere and small dancefloors, its definitely my scene. It's also nice having some old friends in town to go out with. With all the poker playing and being on my own for the first time really I've been really out of touch with my friends, it's something I'm trying to work on.
Looking forward to a really great Summer. God I love Summer. I really think I get seasonal depression . Boo Winter.
Hope everyone is doing well,
Cheers.
TOTALLY SWEET PAD
nolan, May 21 2007
So I moved into my new condo yesterday. It's only a short ways from my old place so it's pretty cool. I'm like five minutes from the ocean and still really close to everything I'm used to up here at University. I plan on waking up early and swimming in the ocean on a regular basis. I also bought a sweet mountain bike and I'm gonna try and figure out how to get to my gym through the woods (I think its possible) and develop some kind of daily routine that involves biking to the gym and back daily as well. In fact, I'm going to try and avoid driving a car as much as possible.
In the past I've worked as a lobsterman every summer but this summer I've managed to save enough money and secure a decent job bouncing at a nightclub so this is the first time in five years I won't be doing that. It's also my first summer away from home, guess I'm a real grown up now.
Had my first session in the new place today and it went really well. I finished up saving enough FPP for my second monitor which is nice. I'm going to build a new computer in a few weeks to hopefully coincide with the monitors arrival. Things are just overall going very well. I think I run really good on Mondays, because I've only had I think one losing Monday in the last like 4 months! Pretty crazy. I found a real maniac at the tables today who would never call preflop, always 3bet or fold and he limped rather than open raising. Then, I realized that on the flop, he NEVER FOLDED if he had three bet. I mean never. I got him to call my overshove with ten high once, and also with pocket tens on a J73 board (I had AJ). It was really weird and you can see some of those swings in this graph, as almost every big pot was with him:
Also, here are some pics of the new condo for those who care. I only really show my room and the common area for my roommate's privacy sake. Nothing special but it is like a good mile into the woods which I really appreciate (I've lived in a loud area/environment pretty much my whole life so quiet time is very much so embraced).
Nice little place if you ask me. Any interior decorating advice welcome.
GL all.

For those of you who are new to the game, when something like that happens, quit immediately. You probably won't be able to make much money afterwards unless you're a really disciplined mothafucka. Thank god we weren't 3 or 5 buyins deep.
