November
vlseph, Nov 30 2008
I think I had a pretty decent November. I failed a chem and a bio exam though so fuck but the poker is pretty decent.
I talked to my cousin about rebuilding and he said if I was already a winner at NL25 there should be no reason to rebuild, so I rolled myself up for NL25 and started playing and I ran pretty bad at first so I moved myself to NL10 to rebuild the roll after losing 5 buy-ins.
Here's some graphs.
This is how I did at NL5:
NL10:
NL25:
Then I read a thread about short stacking on LP and decided I'd try short stacking NL100 with really no clue on what I'm doing (yes you can be a bad shortstacker as opposed to a good one). I won about like $100 or something and then spewed it all back and then some pretty fast as I was getting in lighter due to winning. I realized I was bad at it and it was pointless because even if I get lots of FPP in fast, I have no use for it as I'm not currently clearing any bonus anyway.
I remembered I had a $300~ or so bonus with rakeback at Cake I could still clear. I hated playing there, but I decided to short stack and just clear what bonus was left. I ran bad the first couple days losing lots of 80/20s and lots and lots of flips, but after Thanksgiving I started running better. They also had a turkey reload bonus so I took advantage of that ($100 in bonus).
Here's my stats for Cake then.
I started clearing the bonus with
Deposits: 750+400
Uncleared bonuses: 300+100
It's already a new month on Cake due to time zones and my roll is sitting at 1350 and I have 230 in bonuses left to clear. I'm going to get $45 in rakeback for the month of November in a couple of days so my roll will really be at 1400, so it's not that bad for a week or so worth of work. I'm improving my short stack game from when I started.
Finals are coming for me and after I clear the bonus on Cake (and life at school), I'm going to come back to Stars and grind NL25 til my roll is ready for NL50 (unventured territory!!!). Gonna hope and see if I can cash out of Cake for good for around $2000 by the end of December or so! GL to everyone else on poker and in school if you're a shitty college student in me. I should also go probably grind the books instead of the poker tables.
First big finish in tourney! (micro lol)

PokerStars Tournament #118934455, No Limit Hold'em
Buy-In: $2.00/$0.20
1024 players
Total Prize Pool: $2048.00
Tournament started - 2008/11/11 - 20:15:00 (ET)
Dear HERO!,
You finished the tournament in 9th place.
A $46.08 award has been credited to your Real Money account.
Played almost 3 hours for this.
Final hand I shoved with air when I saw my opponent instacheck, but he showed up with top pair and me drawing dead to two runners.
He tripled up early on in the match knocking out one player and totally crippling another, so it was very tough to play him. When HU started he had a 5:1 lead on me.
This is my nicest score at a tournament so far and definitely biggest ROI.
I plowed through my first two tables on my shoot out but found much more competent players on the third round, where I had to take many coin flips and won enough of them to run into 9-16th payouts.
note: Shoot out pay ladders are fucking awesome. I might look into more of these. Just making it itm is an 800% ROI.
NL5 destroyed
vlseph, Nov 10 2008
About 22 hours of work at NL5 and 10k hands at 18.32bb/100 I have a roll for NL10 now.
I've requested a check of like $700 from Stars to be sent and requested a $700 cash out from Cake to my eWallet account. It's quite a hassle as I have to wait about 24-48 hours although it's been much more now, and then e-mail eWallet and ask for a withdrawal because I think eWallet is strictly for purchasing items online instead of like an online bank like PayPal.
I know beating NL5 isn't much to brag about but I finally feel good about poker again. I had like a pretty sick run of cards my last 2 sessions.
I took a shot at NL10 today like one table when my roll was about at $180 or whatever and it didn't go so well but it might be cause I wasn't very interested. I sat only like half an hour maybe and lost 10 bb.
I have a biology exam to study for so I'll go try studying for that, it's coming up on Friday. I don't want to fuck up my GPA for life just cause I decided to go grind micro stakes this week. I need to get good grades or I'll risk losing my scholarship so fuck poker for the next 1 hour or so til I get bored and come back.
I think I'm ready for NL10 soon, just not tonight since I should be studying.
rebuild
vlseph, Nov 04 2008
Instead of actually staying out my ban, I'm working with a $100 br on stars and gonna rebuild it. I'm going to cash out my cake and previous stars roll which is about $1400.
I'm buying in at NL5 for 100 bb until I make $200, then I'll buy-in for 200 bb.
After I hit $300 playing NL5 deepstacked I'll move to NL10.
$500 - NL25
$1000 - NL50
Haven't made it to NL50 yet, but winning against all the micro donks is boosting my confidence again. Stars doesn't have rb, so I won't have any neat bonuses like at Cake. I do however get to use HEM which I have a 13 day trial remaining.
I think being able to have HEM while on Stars may counteract my 33% rb on Cake, although it'd be nice to have both. Stats sure help me at the table, and graphs are neat for looking at afterwards and tracking my progress.
edit: I realized I am probably addicted even though it's microstakes since after a one week ban I just run to another site and deposit $100.
fml wall of text (vent anger)
vlseph, Nov 03 2008
I'm getting the short end of so many 70/30 situations where you know, I'm a favorite.
It's like when I hit top set on the driest board and I shove it in I know I'm the favorite but I'm just doomed with some terrible luck or something right now.
Memorable beats of the day: Set vs Top Two Pair all in on turn hits higher boat on river, KK vs AK, JJ vs A9, and so many disgusting ones it's so sick.
Just got my rakeback from Oct like $80~ and I blew it all on one session it's so sick I wish I had an EV graph to make me feel better, but all I can do is squeeze my little stress ball and run the soothing (or rage inducing) +++++++EV numbers in Pokerstove.
Coming from a break even month in Oct (including all the bonus I cleared) and coming into the first few days of November I won a handful of BI despite stupid coolers and bad beats, but I just can't take it anymore. I think my mind can only handle so much so fuck you cake poker.
Just initiated a one week ban for myself my BR sits at like around $700 give or take a couple dollars and I got it to $800 grinding at school and in the afternoon (it only got to $800 cause I got my RB paid, I just grinded break even).
I really don't think I'm playing bad at all, or any worse than I usually play or any super big leak in my game that came in since Oct started. I'm getting the money in while it's good and I know that's all I should be worried about, but when you get it in good for like a whole month and you see your winnings stagnate it just fucking sucks.

10 players left probably like in 5th and this idiot 3betting me almost every hand so I call and catch a monster draw and miss it and lose to... absolute shit?
Lawl bad beat
edit: I ran it originally in Omaha Hi and saw I had 66% equity cause I forgot to make the calc hi/lo and my friend did it and turns out more like a coin flip.
Oh well.
first live tourney = first ez ship
vlseph, Oct 24 2008
So I went to the mall with my girlfriend and since she was going to spend an hour or two shopping for a shirt, I decided to go to Barnes and Nobles to read some books. I looked at the poker section and saw something by Negreanu and read it for five minutes, then I walked over to the Starbucks and I saw 3 kids playing poker.
I asked them if I could watch them play since I was bored, then they asked if I wanted to play instead. I said "Sure, are we playing for money?" They told me they were, and we'd buy-in for $5 and winner takes all. Some fat kid sat out and I bet at like every pot and they just folded me ez $10 ship.
Final hand I called a shove with 44 against 22 and we both hit sets but he failed to make quads so I can buy like 10 value menu items tonight.
I think this is a calling and that I should just hit Vegas and become a high stakes grinder since I've won 100% of my live sessions and compared to my online sessions, it's like 0%. Wish me luck LP, I'll try to make it as a pro. Where will my $10 take me? Only time will tell.
cool downswing
