This hand made my day
  edzwoo, Oct 30 2009

First off some more run good.

I was actually stuck like 4bi at one point all from pretty really unreal fish running hot:

+ Show Spoiler +

I can somewhat relate to everyone that complains about HU variance now because this happened enough to make me lose 4bi lol. It didn't get to me though, and that made me feel pretty good. I ended up winning most of it back.

An LP reg sat with me and I ran pretty hot against him (won a 240bb pot with Q4hh on 356hh vs QQ). Then I played this hand which I'm pretty happy about:

Aside from A-high calls being cool and all, that's not the real reason this hand made my day.

I was talking with my girlfriend who doesn't really know how to play poker, but she knows that I do. I showed her this hand and she goes:

"BLACKJACK! YOU WIN!"

LOL HEADS UP
  edzwoo, Oct 26 2009

Small stakes heads up has to be the easiest game in the world. One thing I noticed is that although a 5k sample size means absolutely nothing in FR where you play 1 or 2 hands every orbit, you play about every other hand in HU, so my assumption is you don't need as big of a sample size to show if you have an edge.

Granted I'm not saying I have a 30ptbb edge because that's probably absolutely ridiculous, I noticed the NL50 HU "regulars" are BAD and they have 5-10ptbb edges... soooo that's saying something.

This is like free money.

PS: Waiting for doomswitch.

Teaching it

Haven't blogged in a while. Lately I've been busy doing business stuff and working on the poker club at my school. If you're a new player you can check out some of the content here: http://www.illinipokerclub.com/meetings.html

I'm advocating the people to play like 9/6 lol. I know it works though because my friend is at NL25 and closing in on NL50 playing REALLY nitty and not getting out of line.

The club has been going well; we're getting say 25-50 people coming out to the meetings to learn how to be a huge nit and win pennies at NL2. It was hilarious because it got to a point where I would point to the screen with an overpair:

"What do we do with this hand?"
"BET FULL POT!"
"Why do we do that?"
"TO MAKE MONEY!"
"Why don't we bet smaller?"
"BECAUSE WE WANT MORE MONEY!" *people high fiving each other*

Beware guys, there are new NL2 regs coming to tear the place up. I'm training an army of nits here. Don't worry though, they've got a long way before they make the games any harder.

I'm going to be starting a small group sort of thing for those that are interested in the club where I meet up with them and basically just help them with their game. I think I'm qualified to do this since it'll be mostly NL2 people . It's great getting to meet a lot of new people, and I really love talking about poker. You can probably tell cause I'm always trying to throw in my 2 cents on the forums.

Playing it

Anyway, I still haven't been playing poker seriously at all (last blog post I only wanted to unlock a 1k bonus which I did), but I started dabbling a bit in HU because I've been a bit bored. This is like 1400 hands of NL50 and 400 hands of NL100.

rofl 30+ptbb/100 run good at both limits. Such an insignificant sample size but even so, people are TERRIBLE at HU. I feel like I have a ridiculous overwhelming edge and I don't even really understand HU very well... but I think that's just because there's an overwhelming number of fish at small stakes HU. You could probably suck and still be a pretty big winner.

One thing I noticed is that it's really easy to tilt at HU. Not like, psycho crazy tilt (although that certainly happens), but you lose 5 pots in a row to a fish and it irks you and suddenly you make a button raise with like 62o vs someone that calls too much without realizing it, or a bad river call with a weak pair when the guy always has you beat. Ever since I got to NL100 FR, I've always thought I had really good tilt control, but I feel like it's 10x easier to get thrown off your game in HU than it is in FR. I'm going to assume those of you that play HU would agree because I find it really rare that someone actually monkey spew tilts multiple buy-ins at FR, but in HU it seems to be a common occurrence from all of the hands I've played lifetime. My guess is that if you're somewhat capable at playing HU, but have EXTREMELY good tilt control and don't get thrown off your game, you can easily crush most people that are better than you simply because they'll spew and you won't.

Thinking about it

I really love thinking about various lines and what people are generally repping when they take it. For example, vs any standard passive player, it's clear c/c --> c/r is the nuts. I think there was a statistic on 2+2 linked from HEM that every time the line was taken, the player saw showdown 99% of the time and had two pair or better 80% of the time.

One thing I've been thinking about lately is 3betting. I think 3betting for value really sucks, and when you play against nits your 3betting range should be KK+/air. First of all, their stack off ranges are always QQ+,AK (sometimes not even) so getting it in with QQ and AK is usually just slightly profitable. Of course, this range applies mostly to FR, but even in 6max I think most nits will have a stackoff range of JJ+,AK. Of course we have to take into account their calling range as well, so if the person is never folding to a 3bet then by all do so. Note, this is only against regs or competent players. I think not 3betting a hand like AJ for value against a fish is criminal.

But I think a hand like AK is GREAT to just flat with, in or OOP. The blockers don't come into play just pre, but post as well. You can expect to win someone's cbet very often if you c/r almost any flop with AK, added FE because of blockers against KK+, and hitting your A or K is often a clean out. And it's just so easy to play this way.

A hand like QQ has great value in a singe raised pot because you're just CRUSHING someone's range in a single raised pot.

I think KK and AA have too much value in stacking off and crushing QQ and AK, so I would rarely ever flat with those hands.

The main issue I have with 3betting though is that some people are horrible post-flop (bad regs/fish), so in a sense any hand you play against them they have severe reverse implied odds for even playing a hand against you. If I knew someone was stacking off 100bbs on any flop and would call me down with any pair, I would never 3bet AK because there's no point. I would just be giving him an extra 10-14 bbs the times I miss, and the end result is I risk 10-14bbs to stack him whereas I could have risked 3-4bbs to stack him for the exact same 100bbs. Obviously there's way more to it than that but the general gist is if you're way better at postflop than someone else, 3betting often turns most bad people into fit/fold/spaz as opposed to call/call/call.

Selling it

As I've said before, I'm working on an eCommerce store selling poker chips and tables. The site is at www.chipsntables.com (hasn't been worked on yet!). I've been doing tons of research about SEO and junk, and have put some money down on resources to help me out. I also have a legal business name and bla bla bla. Anyway, I have an account with a poker supply wholesaler, so if anyone wants to buy poker chips or tables (you can check out what I carry at trademarkpoker.com) I can hook you up. I can also do customized/hot stamps for chips . Also, if you're looking to buy chips and stuff and aren't really sure what you want, you can ask me and I'll help you out with that.

Pretty nice to blog about my life a little.

BTW little humor, I got owned pretty bad in this thread: http://www.liquidpoker.net/poker-forum/810145/liquidpoker_tournaments...html

Gotta read Ket's post to understand it.

zomg a poker update
  edzwoo, Sep 21 2009

Hey guys,

I've been keeping myself really busy by selling stuff on eBay, working on my retail store and learning about SEO.

Over the 3 months or so of not playing poker, I cashed out about 2/3 of my roll leaving me with about $1500. Since PokerStars has a $1000 September instant cash bonus for Gold Star VIP and I have 80k fpps, I figure I should convert it now.

Naturally I wanted to start off playing NL100, but since I'm a bit underrolled and everyone suggests I might be rusty, I ended up deciding to grind some NL50 for the vpps. I definitely felt a bit off balance at first, but after 500 hands I felt like I was playing better than I have in a really long time. I definitely feel like I have a monstrous edge here.

It's pretty funny how many leaks the NL50 regs have, but at the same time it made me realize a lot of my own problems. I definitely make the some of same mistakes, just at slightly more acceptable spots and at a less frequency. I also get the feeling that the better regs at NL50 are still pretty bad and don't have a good idea of the logic of the game, but are simply 12/9 nits that decided to open up and play 16/11. This is kinda funny because I was beating NL50 at 3.5ptbb when I was playing 16/11 a long time ago, and I didn't really understand the game either. All you had to do is make sure to fold to c/c c/minraise, pot pot shove the fish, and occasionally throw a random light 3bet.

Anyway less talking more pics since I haven't done this in a while.

Running good is great.

Oh in the second session I totally one outed some guy in a set overset. It was awesome.

Life run bad
  edzwoo, Sep 12 2009

So basically I have a bit over 1k in my checking account.

So I send in a rent check for $545. Real estate company says they didn't get the check, so I send in another one. They magically find the other one and cash both. Checking account balance = $106.37

Over the summer I lived in another apartment where I paid the electric bills. I canceled my account 4 months ago and they said they would send me the last bill in the mail. My account was on autopay, so it took the last bill directly from my checking account 3 months ago, which was fine. Today, they decided that they didn't charge me enough and took an additional $106.77 from my checking account.

End result, checking account overdrafts by 40 cents.

Poker club results
  edzwoo, Aug 23 2009

We got about 650 signups. WINNAR. To put that in some perspective, the booth to our left had about 10 signups. I think we had among the most signups of any club!

Our marketing tactic was pretty sick. We just screamed ILLINI POKER CLUB!! and WHO LIKES POKER!? from 12-4pm. The crowds were so ridiculous that there wasn't really much else we could do. PokerStars used to sell those limited edition decks of cards in different colors, and I had those out to attract attention. Some people tried to snatch them because they thought it was free, and in the end I lost my red colored deck .

I thought we'd get like 2 girls MAX to sign up, but I think there was 10-20 girls that signed up.

I met SpeedyJack from LP, and some 2+2ers and other regs. I also met someone named Haseeb (I remembered him as the guy who shared dogishead's name, not dogishead himself!), who apparently knows DCal Zone and Faraz Jaka?

Here are some pics from today:

I have to respond to my last blog post where I got some good criticism . For one, I kind of really screwed up the question. It was actually a flyer but I accidentally said poster. Also, I forgot to mention we could only use black and white, so colored pictures would be bad. Whoops.

The biggest reason though is because of the people that are going to be joining the club. Here's my logic: the vast majority of the people who sign up will be people who play with their friends or online for play money. The club is geared towards that level of poker for that reason. However, within those people are many, many players who think they are much better than they really are. There were a ton of people who said things like, "I'm really good, I just won a lot in Vegas" or "I have a lot of experience; I always beat my friends", and I was hoping that they might be a bit humbled when they read the sheet and realize they probably don't know much about the game. Also, I have to make it very clear that the primary purpose of the club is to teach poker, and not to actually play it. If I advertise it wrong, I think it's possible hundreds of people will walk in expecting to see tables and chips setup their gambling pleasure. So basically, I'm also trying to filter out certain traffic. Does that make sense? If I'm forgetting something or the logic is flawed, let's hear it!

In any case, I wrote the flyer in like 10 minutes at 5am. Now that I look at it, it's pretty cheesy and bad LOL. I didn't have enough time to check on my blog for responses though .

But after all the chaos, I think today was a pretty big success!
