Motivation by LemOn[5thF], September 09

I re-watched the speech from nFo's blog, and I must say I have a different belief when it comes to long term motivation.

To explain what I believe in, a basketball coaching legend, John Wooden has to take stage.

In short we are talking about the difference between expected curves of learning and achievement. What most mainstream adverts and movies and pop culture would make you believe is that something like this happens:
http://i.imgur.com/bJqEh.png
And life is full of endless climaxes, never slowing down, you keep learning and getting higher and you should hunt these climaxes, as much as you can.

But what really happens with vast majority of people (There are exception) is this:
http://i.imgur.com/dgAXR.png
You become obsessed, neglecting side aspects of your life, family, exercise etc. You jump into one thing without keeping track of balance, and sooner or later you will realize that there is no such thing as an endless series of climaxes, and that the initial learning curve is simply not sustainable. You either lose interest and move on another thing that gives you immediate steep learning curve, only to give up again later, or you simply burn out.

So what do I believe is the correct path, especially for poker players? The path of mastery, where you do have climaxes but small and gradual, you are in peace with long periods where all you do is practice what you learned, and where all you do is in balance be it the attention you pay to your family, health, poker and learning alike. You know when one thing stops and another one starts and you know how to switch off and where you priorities lay.
http://i.imgur.com/X16u7.png
To be on the correct path to mastery, to learn new things in poker, patiently practice them and make them part of my unconscious competence before moving onto another things and to pay close attention to my family, health and balance in my life. To just be on that path is a never ending end in itself. For me being able to follow that path and being happy in the long haul is what matters.

A great series on all this (recommendation of John Wooden's speech came from there):

NL50 done.. or?! by SpasticInk, September 08

New BR status:

http://i.imgur.com/c5Htq.png

Graph of NL50 (missing like 100$ profit that's on my laptop)

http://i.imgur.com/Lbf6L.png

Thinking about stabbing NL100 but not sure it's a good idea since BR still a bit thin. Perhaps playing 4 tables NL50 combined with very good table selection of 2 tables of NL100?

I think my play is starting to become more and more solid, even though I feel very lost sometimes. One thing I've started to adjust is my "timing", before I pretty much acted very fast always, now I always take me time and I feel I spew a lot less now and make better valuebets.

Motivation by nFo, September 08

Dunno if it's old or w/e but just stumbled onto this video and it's pretty motivating. Altough I am currently very tired and about to go to bed I feel like putting in a 20 hour grind session. Will go to sleep first though

I'm at my 3rd shot at 10NL, first one was an agressive shot that didn't go well but I quit after being down 2 BI, second shot was at 19 BI, from 260 to 310 profit on the graph and then down to 240. Right now I hit a nice heater and am up 5 BI in only 2k hands at 10NL, gameplay wise doesn't seem to be any different than 5NL, just gotta stay focused and not tilt if i lose a couple of BI, I hit the 50$ stellar reward so I'm nicely rolled now.

Obligatory graph :

Good Jobs to look for? by LikeASet, September 07

Just graduated last spring with a bachelor's degree in finance and international business. I don't have any actual experience related to finance but I have had a few jobs related to marketing and customer service such as my waiter jobs and one marketing job where I traveled to different sites promoting for companies like starbucks and P&G.

So far it looks like I'd probably only get excepted for positions like administrative assistant, management trainee, or maybe sales/marketing.

Anybody got any suggestions for some good companies to look into and what sites to go hunting on.

So far I'm using my state university's career center website, careerbuilder.com, and a little monster.com to search for job postings.

Also, what are some good positions to look into? I kinda don't want to deal with non-paid internships, I'm looking for something atleast part-time so I can have somewhere to work for atleast a few years while I probably decide to enter my state university's business program.

Being an unemployed graduate fucking sucks, damn my laziness and lack of real-life shit colleges should actually be teaching.

back to 24 tabling , some docus by whamm!, September 06

I dont like it. I'll play very tight, exploitable and occassionally spazz out in spots for enjoyments sake. My life sucks a bit at the moment but I have to do this while waiting for my property to get sold and get me out of this poker-for-money lifestyle mindfuck. I'm done trying to improve and it seems there are lots of retards like me who won't quit the game for whatever reason so that's always a good source of money to even out vs the good regs who are too chickenshit to move up.
Here's some stuff I watched over the week - all of em are good to watch...

donkey kong world champs take it a bit too far...

Kewl videos 1 by PuertoRican, September 05

Since I have no life at the moment, I'm on the internet a lot and always run into kewl videos and other various things.
The videos range from documentaries, combat sports, interviews, and much more.

I'll continue to save all the videos in the tab section of my browser and release them when it gets too full.
I could probably just post them in the YouTube/Video thread, but I rather contribute to both places on and off.

- Marathon des Sables, an 156 mile "ultramarathon". This multi-day race is held every year in southern Moroccan, in the Sahara desert. It is considered the toughest foot race on Earth. (Think of the movie Hidalgo, starring Viggo Mortensen, but it takes place on foot instead of horses. Pretty awesome event that I want to try someday.)

Random by BILAT_POWER!!!, September 05

While watching the May 2, 1972, Reading v. Arsenal match, it became embarrassingly obvious to the then 15-year-old that his white, suburban, middle-class roots made him a wimp with no sense of identity: “Yorkshire men, Lancastrians, Scots, the Irish, blacks, the rich, the poor, even Americans and Australians have something they can sit in pubs and bars and weep about.”

My Life by BrocheN, September 04

Hey whats up LP?

I haven't been active here on LP like I used to be, so I am here to make an effort to get back into the community.

After Black Friday, as many others were, I was confused as to what my next step in life was to be. I debated between getting a 9-5 job using my Marketing degree, enrolling in the Sheriffs academy, grinding live poker and moving out of the country to grind SNE. After making a list of pros and cons for each, grinding SNE was by far the best choice for me financially and logically. My number one focus being that I would earn in 4-5 months grinding SNE, the amount I would make working three years at a 9-5 job.

After an epic failed move to Toronto with a couple of fellow grinders, it was up to myself to be proactive and move to Vancouver (my #1 move choice). After a month of searching, I finally signed the lease for a studio townhouse in Yaletown, right on the harbor and down the street from a couple of sports stadiums.

I moved to Vancouver and started grinding 100nl on July 1st with 132k vpp and achieved 150k vpp grinding 10-11 hours per day for the month. After 452k hands of 100nl-400nl in August, I achieved 500k vpp on the 31st. I am now at 530kish and will be grinding 12+ hours per day to hit SNE by the end of October.

I am highly motivated to finish off SNE to get back to my girlfriend, family and life.

Here are some pics of my place, myself, girlfriend, dog and surroundings:

Got the ADD by byrnesam, September 04

But not the AIDs, thankfully.

I was pondering my inability to perform even simple tasks that have little interest to me and began to wonder whether or not I had Attention Deficit Disorder, my life hasnt really changed in 6 years, so there must be a reason behind my lack of motivation and lackluster approach to finishing projects. Previously i had assumed this was a made up disease for kids who were all jacked up on candy and processed foods.

It would appear i have the 'Inattentive' version, where im incredibly easily distracted, lack focus, cant read stuff properly and procrastinate like a motherfucker.

So today i went to visit a psychologist who specializes in ADD assessment. She works alongside a psychiatrist to sort people like me out on the road to a more focused and 'normal' lifestyle.

I chatted for basically 1 hour straight, starting at primary school and working right up until now about my experiences in school/work, my families history and other stuff. She says im on the more 'extreme' side, but that was based on the answers I gave to a fairly subjective quiz, where i was a little concerned about underselling myself.

Im going again next week to talk further about my lifestyle and whatever else. Turns out caffeine is good for me and she recommended i drink stimulants. I had recently given up drinking caffeine because I used to drink about 2.5 litres of coke zero everyday for years and decided it was a good habit to kick. So i drank an energy drink today after i left her office, although i feel much the same.

Finally, i want to talk about something that grinds my gears:

PCs and PC Gaming: Not the games, but the hardware.

There used to be a time not that long ago when all PCs were a lovely shade of beige, then Dell started to make sleek looking black ones and people decided this looked better. Back then your PC was something to help with school work and use email and have a couple of games on. Your mouse and keyboard were pretty much the stock that came with the PC or a slightly more upmarket version of stock that you bought later.

Now days however, man has gone too far yet again. We have flown too close to the sun and our wings have melted.

PC Hardware is the most retarded looking stuff ive ever seen. Everything that is branded "ULTRA-GAMING" must also include flashing LEDs, the word "XTRME" and feature a million useless buttons and gizmos.

http://www.skuggen.com/wp-content/upl...e-cyborggaming_com_prod_rat5_htm1.jpg

Look at this atrocity of mankind. It has RAPIDFIRE on the mouse button. It does not look comfortable and costs more than any person needs to spend on a mouse.

http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/4/2010/03/500x_haf922blk1.jpg

PC Cases now look like some sort of prop from a 90's sci-fi film. You have to have a window to see inside your PC at all time, and light shining from it. I get annoyed by the LEDs on my laptop, this would drive me insane.

http://www.topreviewshop.com/graphics/gaming_headsets.jpg

This is not what i wanted to happen after supporting the gaming industry for many years. I have never wanted to look like this guy and somewhere along the line someone managed to market this to people as what an actual HARDCORE gamer looks like. In my day the less equipment you had the more pro you were. If you ever played CS youll know that everyone was playing on a PC at 20fps on a ball mouse in 640x480 on a 14" monitor - they played once per week for 15 minutes and it was all natural talent.

Laptops, have also succumbed to this new infatuation with colouring stuff in, but rather than gaming and their spaceship looks you now have to jazz your shit up by selecting one of a handful of pre-existing design templates to ironically show your individuality, and everyones at it.

When i bought my laptop, I thought it was all black, but its got gay silver swirls on it like something out of the matrix. Luckilly i dont have to look at the top and my hand covers the other one most of the time, but it still annoyed me.

Sony is the worst perpetrator in all of this

http://loft965.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/sony-releases-new-color-vaio-p_1.jpg

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqf5jaSHu21qbrsvf.gif

CHRIST! That is offensive to my eyes. White and black are the only colors required.

My parents recently purchased a new laptop and i went along to help them pick. Eventually we landed on a Samsung one that was in the sale. Purchased it and took it home... It was pink. Instead of a brushed steel looking top, it had a pink top. Motherfucker. It wasnt really the salesmans fault since all the boxes look identical apart from 'pink' written in tiny writing on the label of on the side.

Needless to say they werent surprised we took it back to replace it, there must be hundreds of pink laptops on the scrapheap at Samsungs HQ.

This kind of thing should not be happening. I would gladly revert to beige in order to make all of this go away because im afraid of what the future might hold.

Im worried that eventually PCs will look something like this

FanExpo 2011 by mrpav.com, September 02

Tom and I wen't to the Canadian FanExo last week. Lots of fun. We got pics with Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Eliza Dushku (Doolhouse, True Lies), Tom Felton (evil kid from Harry potter/Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Hayden Panettiere (cheerleader from heroes). Going again for sure next year, will probably dress up as well. When I saw taking my picture with Eliza Dushku, her gf/husband Rick Fox was there. I knew he still works for the Lakers so when they finished my photo shoot I said "Hey Rick, tell Fisher to stop flopping so much". He laughed. Pictures can be seen below. Enjoy.

Day 4-10 240 Hour Challenge + Fantasy Football!! by Joeingram1, September 02

Whats going on guys, taking a break here in the middle of the day and decided to update the blog. Currently on Day 10 of my 240 Hour Challenge and at 77.04 hours, need to average about 8/day so I'm pretty much right on pace. At the tables its been win a bunch, lose, win, lose, win, lose. Can't really get anything going it seems like. WCGRider has been staying at our place up here fresh off his multiaccount accusations. I debated playing some HU on his account and pwning people up but didn't want to add anything to the rumors so decided not to lol. I'm on pace to play about 300k hands over the month but that might end up closer to 200k or 400k depending on a bunch of things. I'm actually up a little over 100 at the tables over the time span so I guess it could be worse.

We still have a few spots in our fantasy football league, its on Espn, 12 team, 300usd Buyin, standard scoring/rosters and draft is Sept 7th 6pst. Have a few pros of poker in the league right now, me, ballcup, wcg, aejones, craigthedeac. Luckily this is a fantasy football league and not a poker challenge so I might have a chance to win it, we still have a few spots left too so if your interested let me know. I'm going to escrow on Stars but will be able to do payouts either online or through wire/check if whoever wins is back in USA.
